At least Rei with an I is an existing name.

Japanese, unisex (predominately for girls), it can mean anything from beautiful or wise to zero or oyster …depending on how it is written. In the Anime, Rei is written in Katakana, not Kanji, so it is deliberately devoid of meaning.

Naming a kid Rey is almost as bad as naming a kid Khaleesi. And as far I’m concerned, naming any kid after a popular fictional character is technically child abuse.

I’ve gotta know what the conversation with the wife was like. Is she also an Evangelion fan? Did he just float ‘Rei’ as a unique name?

Honestly, that’s probably what happened. My kid has a somewhat unique name that’s a derivative of a fictional character, and I brought it up randomly as an idea and it stuck.

I approve, to a certain degree (because life ain’t easy for Rei in NGE, to put it mildly, and shit gets pretty weird between her and her husband dad). At least it’s short and sweet, I’ve seen way worse. And, if my name had to be inspired by popular media, I’d also rather be named Rei from an actual show written by adult human beings instead of Rey from nu-SW. 🤷

Exactly what I was thinking. I’d take being named after an NGE character any day of the week over being named after a SW sequels character, lol

I’m gonna hope that was a typo for “husband’s dad”.

What, have you never seen a man clone his dead wife into a half-angel, half-teenager?

(Yeah, weird stuff happens in NGE)

Having seen neither, I gotta say Neon Genesis Evangelion looks more appealing to me than Star Wars. I might even watch it someday.

I mean, you’ve got to appreciate star wars for coming first. Without Star Wars, there’s probably no Gundam (and I’m not just talking about the knockoff lightsaber) and in turn no Evangelion as we know it.

I have a friend who named his kid after a character from the Star Wars EU.

The friend in question was very upset when the EU was declared noncanon.

I went to school with a Belana (no apostrophe), who didn’t like Star Trek. Mostly because her dad loves it (obviously).

I think I’ve seen it as Rey in old timey Latin, like early Renaissance.
