5 day work week. Always seemed odd to me as a child and now that I’m seeing how broken a lot of retirees in their 50s and 60s are it’s pretty clear to me that it’s a terrible idea.

    Doom scrolling short form video.

My dad does this for hours per day after work and nothing else, and now it seems he’s lost all his critical thinking completely and is commonly disregulated, and I’m kind of afraid he’ll get more forgetful and erratic, since he’s already showing signs of slipping into Alzheimer’s.

Using AI. Aside from all its ethical, environmental, and legal issues, I’ve been shocked to see the cognitive decline in folks using AI regularly. Not only do they forget how to do things like write on their own or do Internet searches by themselves, they even lose higher skills they’ve spent years acquiring.

Was talking with a developer the other day, and he said he’d almost had a panic attack recently when trying to do something during a recent outage when he was trying to code something relatively simple and couldn’t even think about where to begin. He said he’d cut back after that, but honestly not sure he will. Every frequent AI user I know seems to be on a junkie trajectory and unable to cope when their supply gets interrupted.

What irritates the ever loving crap out of me is that all the search engines have gotten so bad that you have to use AI to get the answers now… And…! AI scrapers are so hard on bandwidth and servers housing that all the old how-to tech blogs by actual smart people have packed their bags and left. I used to find loads of great self hosting guides by doing a Google search for “Proxmox npm setup guide” and clicking one of the top three results. Now: sponsored, slop, slop, shilling paid product, old Reddit post, etc.

Yes, was just about to say this. Whether intentional or “happy side effect” for them, search engines are awful now.

If there’s one use of AI I actually appreciate and wish could be done more ethically, it’s the ability to skim and summarize a whole ton of disparate forum posts about ultra niche technical stuff.

(As in, I don’t gotta follow the whole irrelevant back and forth to post 344 which was a reply to post 35 that actually has a nugget of actionable advice.)

I like not having 80 browser tabs open trying to solve one small problem.

But then, that also discourages forum discussion, which was already being suffocated by Discord…so that really sucks. :(

This overstates the findings by a lot, and borders on misinformation.

How AI use relates to student performance is complex, varying with how students use it and what for. PISA data show that students who use AI for specific schoolwork tasks, such as summarising texts, drafting or conducting research, attain lower scores in science than students who do not use AI. In these scenarios, students who do not use AI outperform those who do, on average, by around 20 points – equivalent to being around one year of schooling ahead of their peers. However, weekly users of AI for general purposes have similar performance outcomes to non-users. Students who regularly use AI for general purposes, and have learning opportunities at school to develop AI literacy skills, tend to have slightly higher scores in science. However, these opportunities are more common among socio-economically advantaged students, risking a growing AI divide.

As a heavy AI user I wonder if there’s a difference in how it affects people who can literally have the AI do some amount of their actual work for them compared to a tradesperson like myself who can only rely on it (to a certain degree) for instructions but it won’t hang drywall for me or replace a faucet. I still have to do the actual work myself. The AI is just a tool.

Here’s a pretty typical question I ask it. I can’t really see how that is cognitively detrimental to me nor how I would even google that, and why.

Even reading that (atrocious) output is going to influence how you write and speak, because humans learn language via mirroring and imitation. Taking the output as truth also means you are trusting something that is unreliable and easy to influence (I know many companies are deliberately writing to manipulate LLM output).

There are a lot of weird phrasings that indicate it’s not being rigorous with the concepts.

skin that is allowed to sit on it

“Allowed” is odd phrasing. Some nebulous entity isn’t allowing it, and “allowed” is too passive; it sitting on top of the wet layer is the whole point. If it’s necessary to expand beyond just “it sits on top” the extra info should be specifying why, otherwise just drop the “allowed” part.

            The solvent leaves.

Classic AI hedging by using a disconnected and anthropomorphised phrase. Something like “The solvent evaporates, leaving the greasy oil and wax mixture to […whatever]” would make more sense.

            a lot more solids

            Than what?

            Its solvent leaves

A bit more connected than last time. Still not great phrasing.

That skin is the stone-chip coat.

What stone-chip coat? Is this something well-known I don’t know about or is it trying to describe some property here?

it is not trying to be a second ML.

It was never said or implied that it was?

            etc.

In that case, you are asking it a question you don’t know the answer to, and the answer could be wrong. You might have the knowledge to know when the output isn’t factual and reprompt it, or you may not always know when the output isn’t factual; the potential detriment to you probably isn’t so much cognitive, it’s potentially wasting your time, money, supplies and labor on an incorrect answer, or worse, leaving the customer to deal with bad service or worksmanship from an incorrect answer.

Sure, but the starting point is that I already don’t know something and need to look it up one way or another. Yes, the AI answer might be wrong but the guy on the YouTube video or online forum could equally be wrong. That is not something unique to AI.

I’m also obviously not just blindly trusting what it says. When it recommends me a product for example I don’t just go buy it without a question. The AI is just pointing me to the hopefully right direction for me to figure it out but the ultimate decision still remains mine.

          A good recent example:
“I need to paint plywood that gets wet regularly, should I use paint A or paint B?”
“Neither, you should use paint C”
          *Looks up paint C*
“Yes, I definitely should use paint C”

Always feels like “reasonable use of A.I.” is kind of vague and hard to understand for most people. Since it can somewhat follow instructions I wonder if it makes sense to force it to be used in a reasonable way? Like instead of putting the blame on people for becoming brain dead, why not tell the LLM “if someone asks you do to all the work for them, say no” or something

It also changes your personality for the worse if consumed regularly, not only when you’re intoxicated but also when you’re sober, since the time every adult had to reflect about their day (usually late at night when the day is over) and make adjustments not to stray too far from the path of righteousness, they were drinking and indulging their hedonism instead of maturing. But (rant? incoming) telling the average Westerner they have a moral responsibility to themselves and society is akin to an insult or just very confusing so you kinda have to mention things like cirrhosis else they won’t stop.

You’ve got a brain, but it’s easier to run away from obvious conclusions when they’re uncomfortable, and this is a Western online space which means your opinion (morality is subjective and alcohol is good/isn’t bad) is in the majority so you’re comfortable sharing it. my life has had a more diverse set of experiences

Yeah, I strongly, strongly doubt that. Not just from the way you think and write but from the conclusions you draw about everything you express thoughts about.

I don’t argue as much in my usual social circles

Yeah probably because you know how ridiculed and ostracized you’d be in almost any social circle. Referring to normal common human behavior as “hedonistic” and repeatedly babbling about “monotheism” is not only unpopular and weird, no one cares about those topics. News flash: most anyone who is religious is monotheistic. Therefore it’s not interesting or notable to bring up EVER. Let alone CONSTANTLY.

                And still, you didn’t disagree.

I disagree with practically everything you’ve ever written, that I’ve seen. Here’s one thing we agree on: “religion doesn’t need to be used for bad”. That’s it. Nothing else. I get shit on every time I say it on here but I’ll keep saying it, because it’s true. But again, NOTHING else you write resonates in any positive way for me whatsoever.

Here’s what I glean from what you write.

                • You were raised in a cult and heavily sheltered.
                • You don’t talk to normal people often enough to know what “normal” is.
                • You apparently believe in some form of Christianity that emphasizes hatred of pleasure in all forms and also emphasizes judgement to the extreme. It’s not a problem for you that the Bible expressly forbids the passing of judgement. Somehow that part always gets skipped, which you have in common with fundamentalist psychopaths.
                • Yeah, alcohol can easily be bad, but I don’t see any reason to think you know anything about it firsthand.
                • You come off as literally caring about nothing but using your “religion” as an excuse to judge.

Well, just to clear any confusion: I was raised Catholic and was a big fan of what Jesus said and did (still am, ofc) but the Paulian/Roman nature of the Frankenstein’d Trinitarian tradition just didn’t make sense so I was a very young atheist (arguing in Yahoo answers and everything, lol, the good old days) at the age of 11-12. Then I read more and life changed my circumstances and with it, my perspective, and I became a monotheist at the start of my 30s, like Jesus and those of his time and before him were. I’m a Muslim man today (I just don’t take the hadiths seriously because, duh, but idk if this means anything to you, I’m just making sure I’m understood). And I’m not American, we don’t have these popular sects or whatever where I’m from.

And no, “my religion” doesn’t allow me to judge, my morality and my brain does. The same way you can judge yourself and know when you acted right or not (hopefully), I can do it as well. And when I see “moral relativity” for the sake of hedonism, I gotta say something, for all of our sakes (because I need a reminder as well). I’m not here hating on people because they watch Harry Potter or eat too much candy, lol, I’m talking about something that can only evolve into tragedy, so one must be wary of it and avoid it, because “it feels good!” cannot be a passable moral argument (that’s the “Diddy/Epstein argument”, after all).

Alcohol has been consumed by humans for thousands of years and in reasonable quantities can actually have health benefits.

What you’re talking about is alcohol to excess, or alcoholism. Alcoholism is a disease and is typically connected to other mental issues.

Maybe better recognition and support for mental health starting earlier would address some of that.

The study found that people who drank a little had, on average, better health than those that abstained entirely. The study failed to mention that a notable portion of those that abstain were abstaining due to health reasons. As in, their health was already bad and was the reason they chose not (or were not allowed) to drink. But, of course, the alcohol industry ran with the first part and has been pushing it ever since. Once you reduce the abstinent group to only those freely abstaining, the average health for the dry subjects is back in the lead.

Better answer: we’ve been doing it so long that it’s just kinda part of human existence. It’s not great for you but I’ve also had sex with a fair amount of guys that keep their hands on their dick while watching women that don’t even look human so much they they’ve busted their nerve endings and struggle to cum in a real vagina. Doesn’t mean masturbation or porn is good or bad for you but both are sure as hell things humans have been doing for millennia. Humans also really love to gamble, eat fast food, and get on social media. Stop shitting on the behaviors of the human individual, guillotine the 1%, prevent corporations from owning real estate, tax any individuals’ third property at 100% annually and exponentially for every property more than that, make it illegal to work without minimum wage even as punishment for a crime, and remind the 5% that it’s their job to pay for bread, circuses, and thirdspaces. That’s 90% of modern problems fixed right there.

100% true. But I’m fine doing some things that are slightly unhealthy to my body for fun. For example, I go to a brewery/bar almost every day (since I’m in a walkable neighborhood), and I’ve been meeting my neighbors and socializing a ton. We’ve started a vinyl collection because we have vinyl nights at breweries. One “healthy” thing about alcohol is that it loosens your inhibitions and allows you to socialize better for many people. It’s also sometimes bad if you’re an angry buzzed person.

I’ve met many of my amazing friends in bars or while drinking. It didn’t negate the damage it’s doing to my body, but it makes me happy and social.

Supreme Court in PA ruled that “skill games” are just slot machines and that they’ve all got to be removed by mid October. Really hope it goes through but I’m expecting some backdoor measure to invalidate it.

Every other gas station, pizza shop, vape store has crammed these things in. There’s some places that went up solely to have games inside. I shouldn’t judge a book by its cover, but the people you see playing them sure don’t seem like they’re the type who can really afford to gamble. Just preying on the most vulnerable.

And that’s the stuff that’s above boards. Every VFW and church has bingo weekly and they just rake in cash.

I just mentioned this in another thread, but when they film in the area around Pittsburgh there’s a VFW they like to use for basecamp in the one town. Big TV shows where they’re spending millions per episode, but they still have to work around bingo night because they can’t outbid the seniors.

or if theres alot of promoting conservative propaganda in the media, you know thier economy is declining. as in anti-immigraiton, anti-trans, anti-islam, dividing by politics. instead of actual problems that never get address like birth rates(and everything associated with it), HCOL, taxes that the rich should pay, etc. everything else is a distraction. the most common theme is promoting and going to war, is a useful distraction from internal problems.

I don’t mean to get too deep into scripture and whatnot… but “games of chance” are haram for a reason. People should be compensated properly for their efforts and be the recipients and givers of charity, the rest is at least slightly immoral.

Yeah, that’s what it is, I’m sure. People do get murdered and prosecuted often for being Godless degenerates… Oh wait, no they don’t, not in Europe and European settlements at least, and many other parts of the world (and I’m sure I’m speaking to a Western audience here cause nothing I said would be fought against in my circles, lol). The reason they don’t is way more simple: reading and processing Scripture takes time and effort, assimilating basic moral principles and doing good whilst avoiding evil/immorality is counterproductive to getting the bag and going as far as possible in the hedonistic downwards spiral to Hell.

And the reason I’m gathering all these downvotes is because the truth hurts the immature. Who wants to grow up when being a big child is easier? 🤷‍♂️

I’ve read all 3 sets of books, so kindly take your ignorant biases and fuck off. Also, if you think religion is required for morality, that says more about your weak willed self needing an external locus of control than anyone else being dumb (and goes to show your accusation is a confession).

Again, the term dumb is not even being mentioned here. Do you think Netanyahu Is dumb? Or Kissinger? Morality is not, usually, about ignorance but about different personal decisions made with the same information available. You don’t understand why people do what they do. And no, my morality doesn’t come from a book, it’s just confirmed by it and many others, because there’s only one direction people can act in that is righteous (rape Vs consent, theft Vs earning things… and yes, sobriety Vs intoxication falls into it as well).

Most people who claim to follow a religion don’t actually read or comprehend the religious text. Especially true in Islam where the text is in classical Arabic, a language most followers do not speak.

Assuming everyone who disagrees with you must be stupid is a great way to never question your own beliefs and therefore never learn.

                Here, I’ll start:

The reason they don’t is way more simple: reading and processing Scripture takes time and effort, assimilating basic moral principles and doing good whilst avoiding evil/immorality is counterproductive to getting the bag and going as far as possible in the hedonistic downwards spiral to Hell.

Why do you assume morality must come from scripture, and that people would not try to seek it through other means? And if morality can only come from your religion’s scripture, what about the scripture of other religions?

Not stupid, just choosing pleasure over some more important things (or at least arguing for it). And the “moral directional arrows” can be found/understood in the absence of scripture, ofc, but you have to commit to it and have the ability for it and more often than not people are too preoccupied with everything else to have enough mental resources to explore these topics in earnest. And, because of that and God knows it, scripture is useful. Idk about other religions, it’s all up in the air and everything must be judged by its own merits. The more moral sense it makes, the more weight does the ideology hold, warranting more and more exploration. At the end of the day, anything outside of the realm of the material (so, not just religious beliefs but all sorts of moral claims) will be argued about, and the ones with enough wisdom seem to agree enough. Some basic Daoist tenets are pretty damn wise, for instance, and so were Diogenes and Marcus Aurelius to their own degrees, it would be silly to disagree with them just because they’re “not in my books”.

It’s because Appeal to Authority is a poor argument, especially when other people don’t recognize the authority you are appealing to.

“My religion says you can’t do X” will never be a compelling argument or recieved well.

“Appeal to Popularity/Appeal to the Masses” is also not a compelling or interesting argument.

If there are good reasons for your religion to say something or for “everyone” to agree with something then state those reasons instead of vaguely implying their existence.

You are being downvoted because your argument is shit, not because people are “allergic to morals”.

Whenever it takes place it always goes against the writings and lived examples of the prophets, lol. I know the white man raped West Asia (and most of the world tbh) from the Crusades to today using Jesus as a cover, but Jesus was an anti-imperialist, wandering rabbi who shunned wealth and asked everyone to love their neighbour as much as they love themselves… Ofc, a society of mentally and spiritually deficient individuals will somehow make THAT man their leader (or deity even, jeez) and say they’re killing in his name. But is that the fault of the prophet and his message or the fault of every sick, hypocritical, hell bound individual that partook in it?

For God’s sake, think just for one moment. How do y’all go through life with such intellectual hangups? 🙄

Commuting back and forth five days a week working mindless jobs producing next year’s landfill so you can pay for food that half of it ends up in the trash, while talking earnestly about pollution and climate change.

We had the chance to build a low-emission leisure society.
