Anyone taking this at face value is a fucking moron, no better than FaceBook boomers. If you upvoted this, you’re a fucking moron.

This is the way. Call out people who just hurl out insults and claim something is false. Rather than just downvote, make them actually put into words what their stance actually is. Make them hear themselves either become unable to defend their own stances, or expose them for having no stances.

It appears the user is stirring the pot all over lemmy, and has yet to engage in good faith conversation with the question.

I don’t agree with the guy, but it is worth noting that there are around 21k ICE agents, vs 3.8 million teachers.

That extra funding would probably spread a little thin when you’re sharing it with over 100x the number of people.

It’s extremely easy to calculate out. The low end accounting just for personnel in the BBB is 48,500 million dollars per year / 3.8 million teachers results in $12,768/year per teacher.

Now how much is that per year per teacher for the full 75 billion dollars?

I couldn’t source the 48.5 billion for personnel number. I’m seeing a total budget increase for ICE to 30 billion. But still a large number for sure. But that’s total budget, not just personnel.

But look, I agree with the sentiment. I’d rather this money be spent on teachers too. I’m just not convinced that the numbers, as presented in the meme, are meaningful.

Total allocated for 2025-2026 is 170 billion when including the additional 75B allocated by the BBB. 91.6B of which is for the border wall and concentration camps.

Disbanding ICE entirely would be 21k per teacher per year.

I did get my 45B second hand, and I’m not sure where the extra 15B came from tbh, and it seems like it might’ve swapped the personnel and facility portions. Going to the source; the actual bill, page 904 allocates:

29.85 billion to ICE for the purposes of hiring, training, recruiting and retaining officers

So if you think 8k per teacher per year is chump change, let me know where to send the bill as that is my hourly rate which you now owe me.

You can search the internet to see if it is correct or not:

example: “Salaries are being advertised as between $49,739 and $89,528 per year … Existing agents, along with those with U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), will get a $10,000 yearly bonus for the next four years”

On the other hand $42000 bonus to every ICE agent has been discussed elsewhere:

      https://www.reddit.com/r/ATC/comments/1kz7u2e/ice_agent_bonus_proposal_for_42000_per/

So some of them will be having a six figure salary with the bonuses, despite on the lower end. On the other hand average elementary school teacher salary in US is about $50000.
