There was technically a vaccine for diphtheria then (it was invented in 1923, two years before this epidemic), but it wouldn’t have saved anyone who’d already caught the infection.

Balto himself and his team were sold and spent years malnourished and chained to a sled in a freak show wondering what they did wrong, and when they were finally “rescued” they wound up in a zoo. Well fed, but in cages while people gawked at them. Balto watched the rest of his team die one by one until he himself died blind and paralyzed.
Togo spent the rest of his life with his family. Neither dog knew they were famous or why, but Togo knew he was loved.
