The thing they want is an external distraction so people will quit paying attention to domestic issues. Bonus points if Iran actually manages to become enough of a problem to “justify” emergency powers for the president. They don’t actually give two fucks what the final outcome for Iran is.

We joke about Sun Tzu’s advice being obvious, but it’s the advice that an emotionally driven narcissistic nepo baby needs, because that’s who historically has been in charge of militaries. Anyone who understands people knows that cornered people don’t surrender unless the risk benefit feels worth it, but people who don’t understand other people’s mindsets and are focused on glory/conquest are going to think that you can bomb a regime into peaceful surrender and that they’ll gladly give up their leaders. Iran was having mass protests for liberalization. We could have been the heroes offering an out to the leaders and helping establish a liberal republic giving favorable deals. Ten years ago I used to make the argument that having a psychopath with the mind of a toddler controlling the nukes was enough reason for supporting him to be and inherently insane, irrational act of pure irresponsibility. Everyone said I was over-reacting.

The entire world (other than Yemen) stood by while the US and Israel committed a genocide of hundreds of thousands of people in Gaza. Countries not particularly friendly to either country sent strongly-worded letters but not much more. Allies of the US/Israel actively went along with it and focused on crushing dissent inside their own borders. Then you have other events like trying to literally starve Cuba for no reason other than they looked at us kinda funny… and still the rest of the world does nothing. This is the prior information Trump and Netanyahu are working with. Would it not be entirely rational for the two of them to conclude that they can nuke Tehran and they won’t face any real consequences either domestically or abroad?
