I have a big no soliciting sign on my door, when sales people knock anyway I make it a point to waste as much of their time as I can and not buy anything.

I got a warehousing job on the far side of the city from me. To get there, I was dependent on the busses, but the first bus on the schedule for the day got me there ~5-10min late. This was discussed during my hiring interview and wasn’t a problem… In the beginning.

Just over three months working there, the manager pulled me into his office and told me I am required to arrive at work on-time. This needs to be fixed or he will begin writing me up for tardiness. He was the same manager that interviewed me and agreed the 5-10min because of the bus was not a problem. Now he’s claiming no memory of this conversation and that It’s my problem to fix despite me not having any other options.

This is where I told him; Ok, I guess today was my last day then. I then told him I expect the overtime hours I have not been paid, to be on my final paycheque.

This warehouse worked 4 x 10hr shifts per week, instead of the typical 5 x 8hr. This had not been discussed during my interview, I actually didn’t find out about it until my first day, when I went to leave after 8hrs. I live in BC Canada. BCs Employment Standards Act requires overtime be paid for hours in excess of 40 per week, as well as more than 8hrs per day. This means the ninth and tenth hour of each shift, is overtime, per BC law.

BCs ESA does provide a method of averaging hours across a week; allowing 4x10hr shifts without overtime. That requires a written and signed agreement between both parties though. I hadn’t even been told the schedule, let alone signed such an agreement. I hadn’t really pushed back about this though, because I was ok having an extra day off each week, it was still only 40hrs; this was basically just a matter of missing paperwork.

When I told the manager I expected to be paid that overtime, he brushed it off and told me to collect my stuff and get out. Even had a supervisor escort me around to ensure I didn’t take or damage anything.

I left and immediately headed to the Employment Standards Office in my city. They took the details and opened an investigation. It wasn’t a super fast process, but 3ish months later I received a cheque in the mail, as well as a call back from the ESA Office: the company apparently fired their entire HR department and backpaid myself as well as all current staff a years worth of unpaid overtime, to avoid direct fines and a possible lawsuit. All over some missing paperwork for an arrangement most of the employees were happy with anyway. They even ended up paying for my Employment Insurance claim, because EI agreed I was essentially forced to quit - ie fired without cause.

That was, in the end, an act of class solidarity. You did good by hundreds of people.

This is also a reminder to everyone: don’t trust management, get it in writing!

(Not trying to rub salt with that reminder, I promise)

Big dick and big balls mean different things.

A big dick move means you don’t really have justification for your actions: it is considered petty and everyone else thinks you are making a mountain out of anthill. Karens and Kents are just big dicks.

Big balls means courage to stand up for your bounderies against an opponent who is trying to be a big dick and at first glance, it appears they have the upper hand. Dude stood up for theirself against adversity, and fuck yeah, they won. It took a lot of balls and some people would have just roll over and bitched about it. Complained and sounded like a weak asshole and in turn, they get fucked.

But that’s not what dude did, and good on them. However, doesn’t quite fit the post.

Right now, I am being a big dick, as this is inconsequential to both you and I generally, however I made it a point to try and correct you, which is rather pretentious. But I feel this is, personally, justifiable.

So this comment is my submission to the OP’s question.

            I see the confusion here.

There is “big (dick move)” -> an especially egregious dick move.

There is also “(big dick) move” -> a power move.

This story is an example of a “(big dick) move”

    The toilet card.

We had turnstiles to clock in and out of my old job. Couldn’t leave factory floor without clocking out. Before i started working the union negotiated a “toilet card” where you have to go ask the manager to use the toilet and use the special card.

I’d taken to just telling my team leader I’m going and just slipping out the fire escape because I didnt like wasting 5 or 10 minutes finding the manager because the place was fucking massive.

One time I got pulled up and officially told off by the head head guy, the guy right below the owners. 20 minutes getting a bollocking for not using the turnstile. Accused me of fraud and theft.

After that I deliberately needed to use the toilet every shift. Every single time I would go and find the manager, and I would take the dumbest routes possible, going out of my way to not find him, looking in all the wrong places based on where I’m sure he wasnt. It would take me about 20 minutes to find him, a nice round 10 minutes in the toilet, just vaping and checking texts, then another 20 minutes looking for the manager again to return the card.

What used to be about 5 minutes, 2 or. 3 times a week, turned into nearly an hour every single day. The important part is that I wasnt stealing

When religious people came to my grandpa’s house they’d ask him if they could tell him about the Lord or Jesus or something. He’d say sure and listen. Then when they were done he’d say “now let me tell you about what I believe” and spend as much time as they took. I intend to do the same thing if I get the chance.

Loaned my spare tire to a guy once who was “going straight to the tire shop”. About a week later I hadn’t heard anything and he wouldn’t answer my calls. Saw his car at Walmart one night so I grabbed a busted cinder block out of my trunk, stole my wheel and tire back and left the car on the block.

Next morning he calls me mad that I stole my own tire back. I told him I didn’t have a clue what he was talking about but he owes me for my wheel and tire.

Never heard from him again after that.

Pro-tip to anyone who wants to do this sort of shenanigans, you can remove the valve from the valve body quite easily. Just need a tool that costs a dollar. You take off the plastic cover, put the tool inside the valve body and start unscrewing. Doing this will of course prevent air from staying in the tire.

Even more of a pro-tip, do this on two tires so the person cant just put the spare tire on.

Obviously do this only on cars that are owned by arseholes, cunts or the actual ICE.

Only do this with no electronic devices on your person, or with them packed away in a faraday bag. Everywhere you go with a bluetooth or wifi antenna is being logged by a dozen data brokers, and the gov has access to all of it.

You might get away with it once, but your radio fingerprint in range 2+ times of an incident is a pattern that’s easy to spot.

This goes for ALL resistance activity, including simple protesting. The nazis are building lists, and they can use those lists to destroy your life in many more ways than assault and imprisonment (e.g. covertly limit your employment opportunities, housing options, or credit/loans).

EDIT: I suggest you leave your device at home, charging at your bedside. The faraday bag is an easily detectable anomaly (unless you make it a habit). If you need a device for maps/gps etc, your best bet is to buy an old android where you can physically remove the wifi and bluetooth antenna from the device.

If they’re good at collecting and analyzing the data, you stopping there for long enough to do this might be enough. Also, assume there are cameras, on the vehicle and the area nearby.

Security is not binary. Obviously you should be wearing something that covers your face, but you can’t ultimately protect yourself from drones.

The goal is to be smarter than average and defend yourself from the things in your control. The fact they’re so heavily dependent on surveillance capitalism means they’re less likely to use alt methods.

I hear u, but some cars have fucking aluminum valve stems for the tpms! Another think my buddy did as young child to random cars parked on his street was taking a tiny pebble, removing the valve stem cap and dropping the pebble on the shraeder + screwing cap back on it. Zero damage, just have to reinflate, but hell of an inconvenience. And zero property damage = very hard to get in any real shit for.

I worked at a fully remote international tech company that did a yearly in-person meetup somewhere different each year. The year this happened it was Monaco. Flew into Nice, France, then got a taxi ride from there.

Checked into hotel the night before, all fine (tho Monaco was just absolutely sickening with the gluttonous wealth on display everywhere).

Next morning I’m off to the convention center to register and get my badge. Almost get hit by a car not paying attention to my crosswalk.

Get inside, go to kiosk, and look through the terms and conditions. One of which is a liability waiver. For an internal company event. I decline to sign it and escalate my refusal.

Two or three hours later my manager, my assigned HR rep, and someone from the legal team meet in my hotel’s lobby to figure this out. They absolutely would not budge on requiring me to waive company liability for my health and safety while I’m on a work trip.

So I told them I’m not attending and that they need to fly me back home ASAP. Next morning I’m on my flight home while the rest of the company does their bullshit.

I think there were 700ish employees there and I’m the only one who refused to sign the liability waiver.

Thankfully I never got any grief about any of this, but they did PIP me a few years later and I’m sure someone higher up had it out for me with this incident being a motivating factor

A lady came into a store I was working at, acting like an asshole, because they thought it would get them a better deal, tried to angrily tell me I needed to sell her a $1000+ dollar outdoor furniture set for much less than the display price, this was the last one in the store, the display set itself, and it was already clearance price. it was marked at less than $200 dollars. this was the culmination of all the things I hate most in shitty customers. So I told her I was so sorry it was priced too high and I’d get her a better price if she waited there. then I went and did something else for an hour, came back and told her it was already sold early that day and sorry for the mix up. still feel fine about this.

Have a friend, and we have a complicated relationship. Making friends as an adult is hard, but then life shit happens and even the friends you do end up making can be assholes.

I had just gotten out of a divorce, and wanted to throw a big halloween costume party. Told everyone months beforehand, with plenty of reminders and groupchats, spent over $1000 on decorations, couple hundred on snacks, alcohol, weed I’d have stocked. It was going to be a rager. Well, a bunch of people cancel, because my house is like a 40 min drive, but my best friend at the time, he was, for some reason, not giving me a definite answer. Like, I figure even if nobody else shows up, my buddy and I could still hang. But come the day of the party, he tells me he’s not coming, and it’s just so he can maybe find something better to do closer. And I’m just… So upset. Cancel the whole party via an on-line thing, and just sit there feeling fucking awful.

Shit messed me up so bad, it’s like 5 years later, and some of the decorations I put up for that party are still up. I obviously haven’t even tried to host anything since.

anyway. like, a couple months after that fiasco, my buddies brand new girlfriend texts me, asking me to come to his birthday party. She was putting a bunch of work into it, making it a scavenger hunt thing for him and his friends. I told her immediately, “nope!” Not coming. She asked once or twice more and got the same answer.

But in the end, I was still nicer, because at least I gave a clear answer right away.

OP has a point, if a cult shows up at your door selling their beliefs, you can take the opportunity to do some deprogramming. A few of the basics:

      • Dont flat out deny interest, feign insterest and try and draw out their selling points.
      • Be polite, they need to not view you as a threat, offer them tea or something.
      • Attempt to address all questions or as much of the conversation to the younger of the pair (JW travel in pairs).

The point is to show that dispite being antithetical to their beliefs and not interested (your friendly neightborhood atheist) your not out to villify their group. They are trying to show the younger person that the world is out to get them, by doing the opposite, you break the illusion a little bit and are likely never going to see them again as they will not want to revisit the house talking about Kierkegaard.

I knew the key arguments they typically used, and had some counters from that. Having actually read the bible helped pointing some passages in the book to them that they probably never heard from in their church.

But that was in school, 40 years ago, the paper I had written that made me collect the knowledge was a typical school paper. Written, graded, forgotten about.

As I understand it, the cults that send people door to door do it because they know people will be assholes to them. When you spend all day getting told to fuck off for what you genuinely see as trying to improve their lives, it reaffirms the cult’s stance that everyone else is irredeemably ignorant and evil.

I make a point to be wholly kind and welcoming, upfront about my paganistic practice and my satisfaction with it, and if possible engage them in some of the more philosophical ideals that Jesus reportedly championed. I’m not out here to abuse them for their demagogue, I’m not here to test their faith, I’m here to make sure they don’t get heat stroke in those starched collars.

You right but it’s not my job to enlighten people. I’m rude to anyone that knocks on my door without an invitation. You’ve made my dogs bark and interrupted my day. Usually woken me up because I’m always up late.

The local JW’s descend on my neighbourhood like a flock of sundress wearing seagulls. All these women in matching flowy floral dresses hop out of their van and an old dude in a boat hat directs them around with fliers and Bibles. They’re at my door on Saturday morning at 8am. I told them I’m not interested the first time. The second time, I told them I’m going to go off at them if they wake me up again, it’s rude and I don’t want to hear anything they have to say.

The third time they came around I told them to shove their Bibles up their fucking cunts. They still woke me up the fourth time because I sleep with my window open, but they didn’t knock on my door again.

I fucking hate them, and I’m not going to change their mind even if I follow your approach. I grew up in an abusive religious household and there’s no getting through to them. They have a superiority complex about their beliefs and think they’re better than you for being a non believer. Having that conversation with them just fuels the narcissism. I’ve tried with family members as an adult and it has literally never gone anywhere except for a snarky “I’ll pray for you” when the conversation ends.

These days I look forward to talking to them. That whole “planting seeds” thing works in both directions.

I try and plant "seeds of doubt. ’ Paradoxes and fallacies in the Bible such as the origins of tithing, the problem of omnipotence and suffering/evil, systems of control, etc. It’s a lot of fun.

Telling a friend’s girlfriend that he was doing much more serious drugs than she was comfortable with.

This did kill their already strained relationship (They were broken up after he had drained their joint bank account with pay-per-minute online porn) but somehow my friendship with both survived for a few years after.

They never got back together and his life went to shit, including some jail time for embezzlement.

She, as far as I know, bedded the next guy to hit on her and had a kid. I hope it worked out as she deserved better.

My other friends had always hated her, and loved that I had driven a wedge between them… until they found out that I essentially outed them for giving/selling him the drugs.

Following that, all my friends knew where I stood, and those who distanced themselves from me… I knew why. One of them, more than a decade later, is in prison for murder after selling fentanyl-laced drugs and causing a fatal overdose.

Several I am still close with. They know me, respect me, and understand that I will do the right thing, even if I am not the wronged party.

With the benefit of hindsight I actually really regret doing this, but at the time I was a shithead that only thought of themself.

One summer a friend, who was the assistant manager, got me a job working at Game Stop. It was the third worst job I’ve ever had and I hated working there. My friend was running a scam in the store where he would take all the games in the drawers that didn’t show up in inventory and exchange them for cash. Just the transactions I ran for him, he netted several hundred dollars.

What my friend did not realize though, was that there was a lag time between a game being traded in and it appearing in inventory so he actually had been turning in games that were in the system. The store manager became suspicious, ran inventory himself, and discovered several thousand dollars worth of missing games. During the course of his investigation he interviewed all of the employees and when it was my turn the only thing I said was that another employee that I didn’t like personally because he was a mouth breathing know-it-all was the only one who brought a backpack to work everyday, he was fired several days later. A month after that I quit after the store was robbed at gunpoint for the third time in the three months I worked there.

        Yeah, actually.

The second worst was in-house marketing at an Oil & Gas services company where years long difficulty with the son of the owner, an extreme level or boredom and unfulfillment lead to a full on nervous breakdown at work that cost me my job and a good chunk of the life I had built for myself.

The worst was working on my father’s shrimp boat as a deckhand at 15. The job was from 5am to 9pm and the work was mostly sifting through literal tons of shrimp by hand to sort out all the non-shrimp while fighting with crabs and aggressive seagulls during sweltering Texas summers for no pay. The smell alone… I still won’t eat fish 30-ish years later. The first few days I was beaten for being too slow until he decided the improvised rope whip wasn’t working well enough. He let me finish the most recent drag (the net is dragged and pulled in 4-6 times per day) and then threw me overboard, tossed out a short rope, and kept going with me holding on for dear life until it was time to bring the net in again, which was about 45 minutes. The only money for the entire season was from soft shell crabs I collected on the side to sell at the fish market, but he took that money too once they started giving me a decent rate.

When I was younger I tried to write that book because there was more than enough material, but set it aside halfway through. I didn’t want to be known for my most painful traumas. I’d rather get a bunch of rejection letters trying to sell weird fiction than a deal selling pain.

I’m a random on internet, but I’m sorry you had to live that. You are indeed quite strong willed.

If it’s the “being known for” the problem, you can always write it under a pseudonym.

Dude, pain and overcoming trauma is a powerful message, you should really consider writing it down. I’d definitely read it!

The guy I helped frame for my friend’s scam didn’t deserve getting fired. He loved working there and his only crime was being annoying.

Oh! I misinterpreted that the guy you framed and your friend were the same person. Thanks for clarifying.

I don’t like making people upset or feel bad. That does really upset me so I avoid it as much as possible. But, I do have my limits

First - I had an acquaintance that used me and my number for marketing calls. After a few of these calls I was thoroughly annoyed and the next time I got a call, and the lady read out to me my list of potential prizes that included a bbq grilling set and some weekend vacation that included all sorts of activities. I put on my best acting and sounded devastated and told her, “these prizes are so unfair to me! I can’t use any of them! I was born without arms and legs!” I also end up tearing up a little. The lady sounded so apologetic and mortified but I didn’t get any more calls after that

Second - pre-covid my apartment complex used to be visited by the Mormons every Sunday. I’d engage on various levels depending on how I was feeling. I had just finished packing my bong when they knocked so I answered holding it and was like “hey, I’m about to hit this and get high. What do you want?” and they looked very upset and just wished me a good day and left. Later I was hanging out with my neighbors and it turns out they were so mad because they knocked on her door earlier and she answered it holding something alcoholic and was told them she was trying to get drunk

(Third - doesn’t count - wasting scammers time. If I accidentally answer a scam call I’ll waste what time I can. Got a call while I was at my job from windows support calling because they detected some errors on my pc. Took my sweet time with that one, he eventually hung up on me)

Like you, I like to be nice to people. I also like the Mormons even though I am non-religious with a Catholic/Evangelical background. They are often very kind, wholesome people, and in my experience, more willing to self-examine than most Evangelicals. What I don’t like is pushy people, and the local Mormon youth have been ambushing me at the corner store asking to tell me about Joseph Smith and pray for me or whatever. After about the third time in two weeks I started putting on a big smile and telling them that I worship "our dark Lord, Lucifer, son of the morning and to bring me more literature because I ran out of wrapping papers. The number of people trying to convert me has probably dropped by 66%! :D

I feel a little mean, but that’s what you get for not respecting a clearly communicated boundary.
