Have you never had a minivan and a pickup? I moved from Chicago to NW Florida in a minivan. I didn’t think the tranny would make it, it was hangin’ low for all the weight. I used to put the top down and haul lumber in my Eclipse, but a pickup is way easier.
Yes, I do in fact have both a minivan and a pickup right now. Aside from not having four wheel drive or a tow hitch, the minivan is more capable, both in terms of weight and volume (the van can haul full sheets of plywood; the pickup truck can’t). And by the way, if I installed a hitch on it the minivan would be able to tow more than the truck, too.
The truck is better for hauling dirty stuff off-road, but that’s about it.
Granted, my truck isn’t exactly a 1-ton long-bed… but then again, neither is most people’s.
This is lemmy where truck drivers are despised, hateful MAGA fucks.
It’s not in any way related to MAGA, it’s because so many truck owners don’t use them for anything you need a truck for 99% of the time. They’re driven by millions of people as a daily commuter vehicle, with the excuse of needing to move something occasionally, which could be handled by a rental. Then there’s the shitty fuel economy and increased pollution from it, and needlessly massive designs now that are a hazard to pedestrians and other vehicles.
There are real uses, and a ton of truck owners use them for what they’re designed for. Especially for small businesses. But you can’t deny there are a large number of pavement princesses and truck owners that are just overcompensating.
I worked Lowe’s outdoor lawn and garden. Many of those monster pavement princesses are hauling massive trailers. My MAGA neighbor is an asshole with a princess. But he has a yard full of trailers, car haulers and a boat you won’t see him hauling everyday.
So why doesn’t he have a second reasonable vehicle for when he doesn’t need the truck to haul the trailer?
Getting a second car as a daily driver is 100% going to be cheaper than paying for gas in a truck not being used to haul anything. Trailers aren’t cheap either unless they’re rust buckets. And if he’s got a pavement princess truck… I doubt his trailers are rusting apart.
Bit off topic, but I can’t believe people buy new appliances. For $200 each we got the nicest washer and fridge we’ve ever had off FB Marketplace. Our dishwasher was $50 and I found our glass-top oven for free on the road. Nothing wrong with any of those appliances.
That’s just gambling with extra steps. You won on your bets, but even refurbished appliances often have expensive issues that aren’t obvious until after they’ve been in use for a little while.
I can buy 5 fridges for $1,000 bucks at $200 for used. It’s a no-brainer for me. Plus, I’m not contributing to manufacturing CO2. Plus plus, I can fix basic shit, I’m not helpless with a toolbox. The person selling on FB is usually dead honest about issues. After all, you know their real name and where they live.
Go blow money if ya got it. The economy would collapse if 1-in-10 people spent like my wife and I.
I hear your and generally agree, but honestly the cost of a fridge conking out isn’t just the fridge, theres probably a bunch of food in there as well at risk, so maybe 2-3x repurchasing.
That’s like daily driving a giant SUV because you drive eight hours to grandma’s house every Christmas
90% of F350 buyers had to move a sofa once in the last 5 years.
Ironically, most of that sort of thing is done better with a minivan.

So, just out of interest.
How many times did you move from Chicago to NW Florida?
Once. Obviously. I also used that van as a contractor. A minivan is a PITA vs. a truck for most tasks.
Shit. Forgot. This is lemmy where truck drivers are despised, hateful MAGA fucks.

If you need a truck regularly no one is going to come after you. We only hate truck owners that do a few truck things a year.
BUT, if you are pro-MAGA you can suck on DEEZ.

Getting a giant pickup because you might buy a washer and dryer every few years
plus, you might not even get to use those dryers and washer, by the time they you install its an outdated model.
And literally every new washer dryer comes with free delivery and install.

I’m right there with you holy fuck. I put 90 percent of a whole ass solar setup on my house via Marketplace.

And then planning on buying a second SUV, with no second driver.
“Well, you know, the other one was getting to be about four or five years old. It was about that time.”
