    Are pickups mandatory in US now? Or can you still drive a normal car?

      No, you have to drive a truck so stuff you carry blows off onto the highway, gets wet, or gets stolen. Construction worker cosplay is big right now.

      Pickup truck sales graphs and US obesity graphs since the 80s…

        I see the anti-truck crowd is alive and well over here.

        Never had anything blow off, if it’s that lightweight I have ratchet straps. If there is rain I would use a tarp if I didn’t want it getting wet. Never had anything stolen either.

        Trucks are way easier to load and unload, and I can fit taller objects easily. Longer objects as well. I really don’t have much interest in hauling horse manure in a van or SUV. Same goes for firewood and bee colonies. I also have a trailer which is awesome and sees a ton of use.

        Obviously plenty of people don’t use a truck for these things, but I really don’t care what others do with them. In fact it’s awesome having a used truck market clean trucks that have never been put into 4x4.

          Older trucks, sure. I could lift stuff over the sides of my buddies S10 and place them on the bed while standing on the ground. I can’t do that with a modern Colorado, let alone a 1500 :(

          I am not in the market for a stuff hauler, but a euro van seems like it would be a ton more practical.

          “Icky” loads like poop or towing? I totally get a truck here but I still contend modern beds are too high.

    Ford has given me zero confidence they can do shit in the EV market or learn from mistakes, but good on them if they pull it off (and it sells).

    I personally have more interest in a sedan at that price point. Not a truck.

      A truck is easier to deploy at that price point because trucks have different safety criteria. It would cost a little more to make a sedan that qualifies as safe.

    Why is the front grill so tall? What’s wrong with a small truck? If I could have a (relatively affordable) sedan with towing power and a bed for the occasional hauling/light towing… that’d be awesome for my use-case. And if it was EV for my daily commute… why is that such a small niche of vehicles? I don’t need much, but damn these big af vehicles. Maybe I don’t understand EV enough, but I’ll take a hit in distance for a little towing if I can charge it at home

      That photograph is not the truck discussed in the article. The article (misleadingly, in my opinion) ran a 4-year-old photograph of a F-150 Lightning test model when it was wrapped up like that. And yes, that photo looks just like the current generation F-150.

      They should’ve just run an article with other graphics, to avoid the confusion.

        Thanks for the clarity!— But still… why would an F-150 Lightning have so much body (be that big)? Wouldn’t the extra weight of the body reduce the ability of the battery? Idk, it just seems inefficient. Hopefully this next vehicle will compensate against the aesthetic of over-compensating? Who honestly needs to, “haul tons daily” VS “just getting around, with the occasional load”?

        I don’t understand the appeal, but I guess let’s see what they’re willing to build/sell for $30k? I personally wish it to be practical

          There is no reason for trucks to have grills so tall mechanics now need stepladders. It’s all just plastic to sell road intimidation.

    Let me know when I can have a EV truck that has a single cab, bench seat, and a full sized bed that I can fit a 8 x12 sheet of plywood fully laying flat and the tail gate up for 30k or less.

        They stated EV Maverick is dead. This supposedly is sized more like the Ranger.

          Dammit!

          I want one no bigger than the Maverick. Heck, if it just had whatever they called the storage space behind the front seats that was less than a whole second row I would consider it despite being a Ford!

          Small and short pickup type utility vehicles need to come back as EVs. Something to haul around stuff you wouldn’t want in a hatchback or minivan, but comparable in engine power and how they drive.

    Doubt 30k. You can’t find a used mach-e or lightning for that price. Other low cost makers like Slate keep being super shady about pricing, no one wants to say it but the cheap new EV is a mirage. It’s a shame, but there have been a bunch of “cheap” evs that when they hit market cost a ton of money, bet this is no different. Chevy bolt and maybe the leaf are the only two I can think of that cost near 30, and that’s before any options / tax or anything else.

      EVs cost less than ICE to make. A lot less. Musk conned everyone but Tesla won’t be making cars in two years.

      The Ford CEO has stated that they’ve learned a lot of lessons about reducing the bill of materials (specifically significantly reducing the sheer weight/quantity of wires and harness) from mistakes made with the Mach E and the F-150 Lightning. If they can pull off making it use less stuff and require less labor to build, I can believe that they can get things down in price.

        Never trust anything Jim Farley says. They thought the F150 and MachE could demand the higher profit margins Musk pulled off, highest in the industry.

        Farley will never admit those EVs were attempted gouging. That guy just spews bullshit constantly to media.

        That’s slates whole thing too, make parts that do multiple jobs and are interchangable, simplify systems, make single parts and less small components. The idea is really good, simplify manufacturing and pass savings on to consumers, just have yet to see if executed.
