Venegas was detained twice in May and June during immigration raids on private construction sites, despite being a U.S.

And in both instances officers allegedly retrieved Venegas’ Alabama-issued REAL ID from his pocket but claimed it could be fake

Probably trying to use Real ID as a scapegoat. The real problem is the “papers please” racists / authoritarian round ups.

the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) now considers unreliable, even though getting one requires providing proof of citizenship or lawful status in the country.

Translation: they found people they don’t like that have these, so argue must be flawed.

The REAL ID Act, passed by Congress in 2005, enacted the 9/11 Commission’s recommendation that the Federal Government “set standards for the issuance of sources of identification, such as driver’s licenses and identification cards.” The Act and implementing regulations establish minimum security standards for license issuance and production and prohibit federal agencies from accepting for certain official purposes noncompliant driver’s licenses and identification cards, both physical and digital (also known as Mobile Driver’s Licenses, or “mDLs”).

The official purposes covered by the Act and regulations are:

Accessing certain federal facilities; Boarding Federally regulated commercial aircraft; and Entering nuclear power plants.

So Real ID was designed to be good enough for people to use to enter a nuclear power plant, but apparently not reliable enough to identify someone to confirm citizenship? Sounds like some racist bullshit.

Sounds like a typical fascist playbook. Death by impossible bureaucracy.

Everybody desperately tries to comply with an impossible bureaucracy, exhausting themselves preventing them from joining from the fight they should really be having.

Almost like it’s too complicated to be solved on the street during random stops…

    Side note:

Next round of IDs can we stop putting addresses on there?

If a cop needs to know your address, they can view that when scanning it. It doesn’t need to be printed on there for anybody to see. And most people rent and don’t update anyways.

Even DOB too, just have a pass/fail for 21. No one needs your exact date of birth.

It’s crazy we put all that info on there.

Let’s split the difference: ‘21+=true’ or ‘21 on [date]’, so young people don’t have to reprint their ID just because it’s their ‘important birthday’.

Gotta get all them irises into a database so the grunts can scan you on-site. Maybe use an orb or something to do the scan and give people some crypto in exchange.

I find it both sad and funny the very bastards scared of “microchips under the skin” have voted into power this fucking regime paid by techbros wanting every piece of millions of Americans under their fiefdoms.
