400 years ago? The church would kill me now.
Checked wikipedia. I found the following crimes that the church executed people for:
Being a (crypto) Jew, criticizing the papacy, being an atheist, saying Jesus was from Kongo, witchcraft.
Anyone else got some crimes to add? I don’t count the local authorities executing someone for whatever a holy book says, but the Catholic/protestant/orthodox church did
Buggery.
Do you have a wikipedia article? I’d like to read it.
Ah, sorry. I meant someone executed by the church for it.
My bad, have the tendency to take any online discussion initially as a joke.

Not a wiki but had some good info. Couldn’t find cited sources but checked out with the buggery act wiki page.
I know it’s slightly more than 400 years, but: Science, aka. heresy in those days.
Giordano Bruno, born Filippo Bruno; January or February 1548 – 17 February 1600)
He proposed that the stars were distant suns surrounded by their own planets (exoplanets), and he raised the possibility that these planets might foster life of their own, a cosmological position known as cosmic pluralism. He also insisted that the universe is infinite and could have no center.
Bruno was tried for heresy by the Roman Inquisition on charges of denial of several core Catholic doctrines, including eternal damnation, the Trinity, the divinity of Christ, the virginity of Mary, and transubstantiation.
Ahhh the good ole…wait a minute…
Presenting myself as a parallel pope?
… witchcraft?
To be historically accurate, the catholic church only liked to kill its popes and other churches. It preferred converting regular people over killing them.
When it saw regular people killing each other for whatever reason, it only added a repentance tax.
The Church was… not very coherent 4 centuries ago.
Well, just last week there are people that claim to be Catholic publicly praying for the Pope to die. So I guess it’s still incoherent. But it was much more so 4 centuries ago.
Yes, the Inquisition was created to stop people from killing each other. But there were lots of places where they did the exact opposite of that. Yes, if somebody started a cruzade at that time they would very likely be excomungated, except for the few people that got support instead.
“Caedite eos. Novit enim Dominus qui sunt eius.”
“Kill them, for the Lord knows those that are his.”
For some context, this was reportedly said by the papal legate before the massacre of a few thousand Catholics and Christian Cathars. Not only were they fine killing Christians, but the Catholics with them as well.
Too many of the ‘right people’ dying, is bad for religious business. (Make it make sense.)
cool, I think I qualify! yay!..?
why would I hex fields and grind children’s bone marrow into paste?
I am an atheist and gay. Will that be enough?
Depends: are you a monarch?
My ass would probably get promoted for charity and then later axed (figurative and literal) for telling people the truth about sexuality, religious differences, politics, science, art, etc.
Being a priest is all about subtlety and deflection.
