I live in a town that has some bike lanes that are also used by pedestrians (no sidewalk, just bike lane that also serves as a footpath) and I almost never use them. You just can’t trust pedestrians. They tend to stop/turn/change direction at random and they never realize that I’m behind them. Fortunately we have 0 issues with drivers here. They pretty much always leave you space when overtaking, don’t overtake when it’s difficult and never honk at you or get angry, even if you’re riding on a road with a bike lane right next to you. No idea why but I don’t think it’s peripheral vision issue. Drivers look out for what interests them. They can see bikes if they are taught to look for them.
