For me: after setting up all the integrations and fall overs using the arr stack and Jellyfin (inc Sabnzdb etc)… I keep circling back to Nova video player.

It’s arguably not even self hosting…but there something undeniably cool about sticking a USB stick into a router, installing a single app on your TV and boom, done. EDIT: of course, it can consume the *arr stack, integrate with Ombi etc
IOW, I really like stuff that simple to set up and punches above its weight class.
I love Immich. I’ve pulled in all my photos going back to high school in the early 2000s and it’s so awesome having a timeline of them.
I love Immich for the fact that since I cannot hold peoples name in memory for more than a minutes, and I meet a lot of new people, so being able to take a photo and save their name is big for me.

I have a couple thousand photos that were taken since around time When blackberry was big and before. Older family photos I’ve scanned. Home videos from vcr tapes. Stuff I wouldn’t want to use up my space on cloud drives but it’s sooo nice having them in Immich and organized.
I have local backups and offsite backup btw, and redundancy in the server itself. But Immich is great. Paid supporter.
I run many of the usual suspects, but I would say Home Assistant is on the top of the list.

Hook it up to a UPS and it basically has 100% uptime regardless of internet connectivity or power. I love how resilient it is.
The only drawback is that most smart home devices aren’t on the UPS, so if power goes out, you still lose most connected devices.
Kind of. A lot of my stuff is also on battery and the security camera and router is on UPS so during a power outrage I still have access to cameras, per room sensors and all the door and lock sensors. I would say ~50% of devices are still accessible.
Navidrome for me. I have a physical collection of around 2000 albums across CD, vinyl, and cassette, plus a lot of digitally only purchases over the years. Finally getting it all on my own server and being able to just tap a button to shuffle the entire collection is just about everything I ever wanted.
May I ask why Navidrome over Jellyfin or Plex? I’ve been considering it, but I have no good reason to switch if it’s working right now the way it is.
Mostly because I’m a lot pickier about my music collection than video. There is no chance of Navidrome overwriting my tags. It just doesn’t have the ability.
With a large collection (getting up toward 28,000 tracks), I also wanted to make sure that whatever I was using had a comfortable, music first interface. Jellyfin felt cumbersome in contrast to Navidrome.

Its been really fun to hunt for blurays of my favorite shows and take the time to rip them and get all the extras labeled.
Same goes for looking at bandcamp and buying CDs again.
I still have some media I liberate… I mean they won’t make blurays of everything sadly.

This! I’ve been loving flipping through DVDs and blurays at Goodwill looking for gems to put in Jellyfin. I love that they will never go away, and I still feel a little giddy when I can watch something from the NAS in my office when I’m at someone else’s house. Today, my daughter and my niece each watched different episodes of Octonauts at the same time on different devices, and both were a thousand miles from my server. ☺️ All from a raspberry pi!

Email’s probably the most satisfying. I learnt a lot in setting up my own email server, and it’s nice being in complete control (well, of my end of things at least, ofc not of the other person’s end) of such an essential service.

There are some decent packages out there like MailCow, Mailu, there’s another one for Docker, but it escapes me. I’ve tried, and failed. From what I understand, it takes a level of dedication.
Tbh was quite painless for me! Had a few hiccups but it was educational to troubleshoot them, and once it’s up and running, I haven’t had to touch it for the most part. Had to update my Dovecot configs when they changed the config syntax but that’s all I can think of. And will probably see about switching from spamassassin to rspamd because I swear spamassassin has so many false positives no matter how many false positives I feed to it to train it. But it’s really not so bad, and I would recommend it as a decent learning opportunity for folks who like tinkering with computers.
I didn’t expect to even need a NAS, but I can no longer live without two now. Having all my data in one place, automated backups on my secondary NAS. I found a cloud storage provider I like. Just the whole stack is wonderful and I’m never going back.
Could I ask what cloud storage you went with? Looking for recommendations for potential backups.
I discovered Tresorit and I like it so far. $150 usd a year for 1 TB. Owned by the Swiss Post of all things. I prefer state owned or non profit companies where possible as service providers.
I also wanted something GDPR compliant and outside the scope of the Cloud Act. I didn’t want my data accessible by a hostile nation.
I like their cli tools, though they are setup a bit weirdly on linux. It’s more like running binaries and scripts than installing a package. Nevertheless, it gets the job done. Upload speed isn’t amazing, but it is overseas. Took nearly 24 hours to send 100gb or something. My server handles it, so its not a concern.
I’m not sure I could recommend it as a replacement for a Google Drive since I don’t use it that way. I just turn the sync on once a week and it’ll diff what’s on my backups.
I might setup a different folder to use as a more daily cloud storage and see how that goes. There’s desktop and mobile apps.
OpenWRT, pihole, immich are among the most well-functioning powerful and clean pieces of software I have ever used. They just work.
Definitely Plex, it’s pretty much the entire reason I’m self hosting in the first place!
Haven’t watched or listened to any mainstream media in another way for years and it also gets plenty of usage from other people.

Jellyfin is free and open-source, which is why it is very popular with the lemmy crowd. But unless you value those two aspects extremely high, it’s not better.
Yeah anyone who bought a lifetime Plex pass back when it was very reasonably priced is left looking at the jellyfin/Plex debate a bit crosseyed.
If you don’t have a lifetime pass, and need to cut costs, go jellyfin. Otherwise, I choose Plex.
Lifetime plex holder here, haven’t installed plex since the third time my server shit the bed and it couldn’t recover. Jellyfin has never had an issue with hardware failures. It also doesn’t try to advertise random shit to me that I’m not interested in, so there’s that too.
Jellyfin struggles with remote viewing. I’m not telling my fam to install tailscale on all their devices and to switch it on when wanting to watch a show.
That’s a you/network problem not a jellyfin problem. I run it exposed via a reverse proxy the sane way I expose Plex. I’m not using their bullshit proxy.
If you truly think the average tech illiterate person (the overwhelming majority of people on this planet) is going to understand/be okay with the hoops needed to view contents of a shared jellyfin server then there’s no more conversation to be had.
With a reverse proxy there’s no need for hoops unless you add some authentication mechanism on top of that. I use reverse proxies for several things so that they flow through filtering like crowdsec or fail2ban. It just routes the single port to the device on question as is. The idea is to make it indistinguishable from a fully exposed port to the user. Just have to make sure whatever system runs the reverse proxy is secured. I always make sure that nothing significant is on the system that is exposed to the internet other than the reverse proxy server and all other ports are closed internally and externally. Ideally a device that has multiple Ethernet ports works well so you can keep an ssh port open on the internally facing ethernet port for troubleshooting. Nice if they are 2.5Gbit or 10Gbit ports, too, since they route a lot of traffic. But not needed.
How is it any different to viewing a shared Plex library to the end user?

100%. Home Assistant has proven to be incredibly useful in my house. My wife loves it for the laundry notifications, the fact that I essentially replaced Life360 with it (Traccar, really, but it ties into HA so nicely), and the automated lighting: our basement (the younger kids’ play area), and themed lighting for the outdoor lights.
We’ve been fighting tangled toilet flapper chains over the last few years. The tangled chain keeps the flapper from closing, which causes the tank to continuously run into the bowl, which causes my water bill to skyrocket if gone unnoticed (we have 5 kids, 4 toilets, and the chains get tangled no matter what I do: new chain, longer chain, shorter chain, different type of chain/string/twine, etc… I blame the hard water). I finally got fed up, so I bought and installed a zigbee water level sensor for each toilet tank, then whipped up an automation which notifies us via Android’s “alarm_stream” notification channel if a sensor has been dry for longer than a few minutes. That channel overrides DND, and I am going to add an entry to ping my HA Voice thing as well in case we don’t have our phones on us.
You should really up your game and buy some ESPs and servo motors to jiggle the toilet handles when the toilets are running.
I did, actually! Got a couple ESP32s set up for Bermuda, but I’m having a hard time figuring out how to make it…work.
Maybe use ESPHome on to run the servo back and forth a few times and have an automation in Home Assistant to trigger the servo when it detects the toilet running. The hard part would probably be getting power near the toilet and connecting the servo to the handle in some fashion.
I had the same problem with a toilet. I replaced the chain with a rod made from thick copper wire I had leftover. Works like a charm, doesn’t get jammed open anymore.

Yeah you can really go overboard i suppose. But i also dontl like scrolling and looking for stuff. So just having some local stuff helps me to not interact with all those sites. Esp these days with bans and vpn bans and tracking and whatnot

I still love getting messages via xmpp from friends and family using my own snikket/ejabberd instances after years of use. Calls as well.
Video conferences via jitsi meet fill my heart with joy since the covid epidemic. These are also xmpp based. It’s just a cool lightweight protocol.
XMPP is nice but even with all of the quality of life extensions it definitely feels clunky. I tried switching to it recently from matrix and while matrix leaves a lot to be desired I found it was more useful in its current form than XMPP.
I use a jmp.chat # w Snikket server on Cheogram. Calls handling through native dialer. Works pretty well minus kicking off group chats with mixed users.

Well yunohost seems to support prosody, that should work very well. Snikket is basically just prosody with some extensions preinstalled. If you want an xmpp server on yunohost you could just install prosody or alternatively run snikket in a docker container. Prosody might even be easier to setup if you can install it via the yunohost gui.
