It’s shocking to see it as a US citizen too. I’ve heard about it, but to see it in writing, is depressing af.

Shocking? The idea of “self-deport” existed a long time ago.

Edit: Idk what the downvotes are about, but its naive to believe that xenophobia didn’t exist before trump

            https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deportation_from_the_United_States#Voluntary_departure

Voluntary departure, also known as “informal deportation” or “return”, is the most common form of expulsion in U.S. history, accounting for 85 percent of the nearly 57 million expulsions between 1920 and 2018.

            Voluntary departure, aka: “Self-deport”

As European you should be aware that this idea has been used in countries here. German and Swedish approaches have already been posted, and here is another: Austria offers Syrian refugees 1,000 euros to return home.

As “Europeans” we need to get off our high horse and stop pretending we do things better.

      Really? Swedish government:

[G]rants may be paid in the amount of SEK 350,000 for those who have reached the age of 18 and SEK 25,000 for those who have not reached the age of 18, but not more than SEK 500,000 for spouses or cohabitants and not more than SEK 600,000 per family

      https://www.regeringen.se/pressmeddelanden/2025/04/ett-kraftigt-hojt-atervandringsbidrag/

So that is a litte less that 35,000 USD (after this proposed increase). This is liberal politics in Sweden.

Also to note, the first statement from the minister there in that link, Johan Forssell, his son is active club neonazi. He is still in the party and a Swedish minister. That, and how his party is collaborating with a full party of “ex” neonazis, is how far separated our governments are from nazis in Europe.

Germany actually has a similar program: https://www.returningfromgermany.de/en/page/voluntary-return/
