I mean, you can say that about someone as an insult but I don’t think people are saying that to friends or family.

Why an insult? This may be simply a factual assessment of someone’s abilities.

If someone tells me I am unable to participate in London Marathon, it is not an insult, just a fact.

Unable is a different thing than shouldn’t. Unable is clear, shouldn’t implies that you’re defective in a way that should not be passed to next generation. This can also be factually true in case of some terrible, hereditary disease but I doubt it’s what we’re talking about.

Also, discussing fertility with other people is becoming thing of the past. It’s not polite to ask people if and when will they have children. It’s even less polite to suggest them one way or another.

          Are you being intentionally obtuse?

We are discussing telling someone to “not have kids”. Similar to my example of telling someone to “not run London Marathon”.

No, not intentional. Are you talking about someones abilities to be a parent? Like telling someone they should not have kids because they would be a terrible parent? Still feels like an insult.

The obvious difference is that very tiny % of people actually are able to run a marathon but vast majority of people have or want to have kids. Telling someone they are unable to do something natural is definitely not nice or neutral thing to say.

Ok, just a personal advice for you then. Don’t ever tell anyone they should not have kids. They will not think it’s just a factual statement, trust me.
