Jacob Geller has a video essay on the Nuremberg Trials. I always figured they’re the gold standard of war criminal trials, but the reality isn’t as clear. It didn’t see any high ranking Nazi officials see justice, it didn’t sway public opinion on the war or fascism, it didn’t prevent genocides from happening again. It did make Allied powers look like the good guys though, even if a few months prior the USA dropped two nuclear bombs on civilian populations indiscriminately killing hundreds of thousands.

Lemmy Shitpost@lemmy.world•Let us end the stovetop war with the real champEnglish
2·2 days agoNow I’m picturing someone putting a marshmallow on a spoon and holding a lighter under it to roast it.
My health class was taught by our gym teacher and she was terrible at it. Some points I remembered being taught:
- Hypertension is when the hamstrings of your legs shrink because you don’t stretch every morning. Hypertension can kill you, so make sure you stretch.
- All drugs make you hallucinate. Every single one of them. Usually dragons. People die on drugs because they’re trying to get away from the dragons and jump off buildings or run into traffic.
- Babies have super suction power which they use to breastfeed. An adult cannot get milk from a breast because they can’t suck hard enough.
I learned these were wrong after starting secondary school where biology was taught by someone who studied biology. Except for the breastfeeding thing. That one was through personal research.
My project and I were having problems, but opening things up and bringing in Claude has reignited the fire we once had. We’re committing changes like it’s our first week together again and adding features we never would have thought of adding before. Some people make fun of me when they see Claude’s commit messages in my project, but I’m confident enough in my programming abilities that I don’t let it bother me. I know my project and I have something special.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Does the net positive of Gene Therapy out weigh the negative? How so?English
3·7 days agoAltering DNA can be done in two ways and for two reasons, giving four scenarios with varying ethical considerations. The ways are somatic and germline and the reasons are therapeutic and enhancement.
Somatic cells are cells which aren’t involved in reproduction. Changes to somatic cells don’t get passed on to children. Changes to germline cells do cause those changes to be inherited. A therapeutic reason is to eliminate a disease. An enhancement would be something like making someone taller or giving them blue eyes.
Altering somatic cells for therapeutic reasons isn’t any different than other medicine. Altering germline cells for enhancement reasons isn’t any different than eugenics.
Altering somatic cells for enhancement reasons and altering germline cells for therapeutic reasons are where the debates tend to be. While having the procedures done can be considered a huge benefit, it can be argued that they could also create biases against people who don’t have them performed, which is essentially the plot of the sci-fi movie GATACA.

13·9 days agoI didn’t know much about Ted “Unabomber” Kaczynski other than he wrote an environmentalist manifesto and killed an oil executive which I thought was pretty based. Then I watched a documentary on him and he’s basically like every other serial killer except he also happened to be an environmentalist.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What is your opinion on the recent decompilations of games and for-profit software? What do you feel about the use of AI in these projects?English
22·10 days agoThere was a team decompiling Super Smash Bros Melee. It was slow going and they eventually switched to using AI to do it. You can tell where they switched if you look at the source code they published.
The old sections done by hand contain function names like “HSD_PadGetRawQueueCount()” containing variables like “queue_count” and “interrupt”. The new sections generated by AI contain functions names like “Fighter_Spaghetti_8006AD10()” with variables like “x221F_b3” and “x2224_b2”. This is slightly better than reading the raw assembly, but clearly nobody in the group understands what the new sections control or how they work if they can’t even give the functions and variables proper names.
So what’s the point? Why decompile Assembly nobody can understand if the result is archaic C code nobody can understand?

Technology@lemmy.world•‘Pure insanity’: Mathematicians will need years to make sense of OpenAI’s latest dropEnglish
140·13 days agoThis seems to be the mathematical equivalent of using AI to submit 200 unverified pull requests to an open source project and then telling the maintainers it’s their job to figure it all out.
The one mathematician saying he’s not going to spend hours of his time to verify if a slop report is true, let alone do it for dozens of reports, reminds me of all those projects making rules that unverified AI pull requests will be trashed.
Like, he actually stole her name and keeps it in his mouth? Is Chris Rock a fae?
You should aim to have these regrets because it’s the people who lived long enough to be interviewed on their death bed that have them. The people who died suddenly probably have regrets like “I wish I hadn’t been texting while driving.”
I hate how people are using AI for this now. It used to be that you had to actually do that work of kidnapping your therapist and getting them to roleplay as your ex-wife at knifepoint.

4·18 days agoI believe the companies that own the patents on those types of drugs forbid them from being used for lethal injection. It’s why prisons are using weird mixes of drugs they acquire from unknown sources that don’t seem to actually work the way they intend.
And then everybody clapped. “Wires are crossed. $6,500. 21 days to fix.” Am I playing pretend with my nephew?

The headline makes it sound like he stole from the addiction hotline to fund his addiction. He stole from his previous real estate company, was found out, fired, and charged, became director of an addiction hotline while the case was being heard, and has now recieved a sentence.
