Most truckers would probably love to be armed. Most trucking companies don’t want that at all, for many reasons. The biggest are:

Complying with the law in every jurisdiction a trucker may go is so difficult as to be nearly impossible. There is a lot of risk in breaking the law due to some obscure technicality in some places. For example, some jurisdictions allow concealed carry, but don’t allow carrying with a round in the chamber (most people who carry, carry with a round in the chamber). Simply being licensed to carry in all 50 states is difficult. Some states will recognize permits issued by (some) other states (known as “reciprocity”), others won’t.

Add to that, what is and isn’t considered “self-defense” can vary wildly from one jurisdiction to another. Just understanding this in one jurisdiction can be difficult, let alone every state, city, county, municipality, or unincorporated territory a trucker may find themselves.

The other part of it is, 99 times out of 100, defending a self-defense case will cost a lot more than simply letting the thieves take the entire truck and trailer.

Who has front and back doors that are keyed differently? I have one key for all doors.

Also, most locksmiths have cool key designs you can buy. Do that instead. Maybe do some electrolysis or powder coating if you must DIY. Paint will flake off inside the lock, gum up the works, and ruin your whole day.

If you absolutely must, purchase a burner phone and travel with that. Mail your real SIM, phone, and SD card to yourself or someone you trust

For cameras, purchase brand new storage or take none with you and mail the real SD cards to yourself or someone you trust.

For laptops, remove your hard drive and mail it to yourself or someone you trust. Travel with a new hard drive, a fresh OS installed, and the bare minimum files.

You can also encrypt your storage before mailing it. But, unless you know what you’re doing, you run the risk of losing that data. Make sure you know how to decrypt the drive/files and test your procedure before you rely on it.

The reason it was an issue with old TVs is because they worked by firing electrons at the screen. Magnets would misalign the internal components resulting in an area of the screen with permanently damaged coloring roughly in the shape of the magnetic field.

The reason it was an issue with old hard drives is because a magnet would read and write the ones and zeroes off the drive platters kind of like a vinyl record player, and any magnetic interference could potentially corrupt the data on the drive.

Modern solid state storage devices are (mostly) unaffected by this problem because they read and write data using electricity instead of magnets.

I usually open a document and type notes to myself. If I followed documentation, I’ll link it and download an offline copy in case it 404s one day. I also export configurations to csv or json and link those.

There’s no such thing because a human had to program and train it (on data created by other humans, no less).

It’s not about who is/not worthy of that level of trust. It’s about the risks associated with putting that much private information in any one place.

Even if you trust the person you’re giving your info to completely, mistakes happen every day, that many identities in one place is an attractive target for hackers, and there are very few regulations that would require a private company to disclose such a breach, even fewer that would require them to compensate you for any damages resulting from such.

It can be simpler than that. If operating systems offered an option to create a user account flagged as a child account, it could also come with software to limit the use of child accounts on the local machine, and let the parent configure what is/not blocked.

I know third-party solutions exist for this use case. My point is that the functionality could be implemented better and use of it could be more mainstream.

Parents and human moderators solved this problem just fine. Everything changed when every platform wanted to be the first to cut moderation costs by using LLMs instead.

They abandoned a perfectly working system and have been pitching a fit about restarting it because “it costs too much” ever since.

“Better” and “more acceptable” are very subjective.

If you’re asking me what I think, I think a solution that verifies identity is uncalled for. I think the problem, though real, is also greatly exaggerated and mostly caused by a failure of platforms to moderate (Roblox, for example).

Companies don’t want to moderate their platforms because that costs money. Developers need to add the reporting functionality and paid staff need to review and action the reports. I think this is one reason tech companies are so interested in AI; automated moderation. But, AI still requires compute power, which is still a cost.

If tech companies can claim handing over your ID will solve the problem, they get that sweet private info they want so badly for free, AND they get a cost-free way of claiming their platform is moderated; it’s a double win.

I think requiring platforms to moderate themselves with humans is a very small price to pay in exchange for the broad access to our private data and hundreds of billions of dollars of advertising revenue they enjoy, and a much better, much more acceptable solution.

Edit: Just remembered, another big component to all this is, big platforms like Meta and Reddit are getting hammered by AI scrapers, which drives up hosting costs, and being bombarded with AI slop, which negatively affects their engagement KPIs. ID verification will solve both of these problems.

It’s pathetic because, the only time laws or regulations ever get passed is when one oligarch wants to weaponize the government against their competition. It’s a sick game, and we all lose every time a move is made.

I think you’ll have a hard time finding anyone who disagrees with the idea that children shouldn’t be exposed to the full power of the unfiltered internet, and that’s what makes these laws so insidious.

The issue lies in how governments hope to achieve this goal. Current laws propose that users provide the private company hosting the site (Facebook, TikTok, etc.) an image of their government-issued ID and/or other identifying information. The primary concerns are 1) these companies will have even more access to private information about their users, and 2) any security breach of these companies would risk the identities of their millions of users.

Imagine being able to apply for millions of stolen credit cards because of one successful hack. That’s the risk being created.

There’s a phenomenon called “learned helplessness” where people simply don’t realize they’re capable of doing such things for themselves. They hit the limits of their knowledge and instinctively look to another human for answers, failing to realize they’re capable of taking the very same steps as the person they’re asking.

I’m not making excuses for them, just telling you so you know what to research to understand it better. It’s one of those things, once you know what it is, you start to notice it everywhere.
