It’s been on my ‘one of those days’ list for years now, and with Resonance out, they ran a $6 Steam sale for the original which put it in the impulse buy category. Fast forward a week and I’m out of town for work with some hotel time to kill so hooked my Steamdeck up to the TV and gave it a go and wow… I see what the hype is about.
Any non spoiler tips, tricks, or things I should be on the lookout for?
Pay attention! Remedy is like the Twin Peaks of video game studios so paying attention to the plot as well as reading everything in the appendices and the documents uncover is vital.
Also HIGHLY recommend playing Alan Wake and Alan Wake 2 if you haven’t already. Same studio and a connected universe!
I’ve wishlisted them both as this keeps coming up!
Well that explains why I couldn’t get into it, despite being a big fan of the first Alan Wake; I’m way too ADHD for this game. Couldn’t enjoy Alan Wake 2, either; it’s too complicated for me.
It’s funny how different people, same thing, react differently. Also have ADHD and loved the game because there was always a new shiny with a tiny bit of lore dropped.
Super late to the party…

This is my kind of place!
Control’s combat mechanics are made specifically so that enemies hit you less the faster you’re moving. So picking up momentum and keeping it as much as you can is a solid strategy. Sometimes I simply run around in circles when low on health, trying to get some easy kill or find more health somewere. It works surprisingly well.
Also, Throw is OP in general. A little trick I only recently learned myself: You can pick up something from behind an enemy and have it hit them as it floats towards you.
Have fun! :)
Oh dang that’s really good to know, I’d been playing it like most other third person shooters and trying to methodically work the cover system. YOLO it is!
It’s so good but I fell out of it and really need to go back and finish it
I stopped playing about 8 hours in. In my experience it was like that review of Pride and Prejudice that said “it’s just people going to other people’s houses.”
I just finished this a few weeks ago. Amazing game.
I felt so bad for getting this game for free on EGS that I ended up buying it when it hit Steam. That’s how good this game is.
If you’re playing with a controller, don’t be ashamed to go into the optional settings to make aiming easier. I absolutely suck at fps games on controller, the aim assist was crucial for me to enjoy playing. I’m glad I did because this game is amazing!
I own this game across five storefronts and have never paid for it. I liked it, but ran out of steam and didn’t finish.
I downloaded the demo for Switch, it let me play up to the point where you are allowed to jump, then it was like no you’ve seen enough. Never looked at it again. Got it free from Epic so I guess I have no excuse not to try it now.
I loved it, it’s a pretty unique experience. But to be totally honest, I hated it until I messed with the assist mode settings. So my personal tip, which is definitely not for everyone, is to completely customize those settings as much as you want. Some of the default combat and QOL features are way off in my opinion, and once I got over the shame of changing some fundamental settings, the game opened way up for me and I was able to get completely into the story.
The devs added the settings a year or two after the game’s release, so they must have been getting a lot of feedback.
Enjoy! You’re in for a wild ride.
What did you change? I played with mouse+kb and found it to be pretty easy tbh. Only some occasional Board Countermeasures seemed to be a bit unbalanced at the beginning.
Reload times, damage multipliers, you name it. I played it years ago so I don’t remember the exact specifics, but I came up with a sweet spot that worked for how I wanted to play.
That’s what’s so nice about these settings. You can gradually ease up the stuff you’re having trouble with, without cheesing it up all the way.

Yeah, I’m with you on this, and wish I had done so in hindsight. The gameplay was interesting for about a couple of hours, but ultimately I think the game’s more about the graphics in the quieter moments–although as a raytracing showcase, it’s less impressive now than it was in 2019–and the wacky stuff it comes up with than anything.
Still beautiful architecture. The hardware that can run it with ray tracing on is probably more expensive now than it was in 2019 🫠, however it looks almost exactly the same without ray tracing since it has really good baked lighting.
Oh nice, I’ll dig into those, thanks!

Read/watch everything. Maybe after dealing with an object of power, there’ll be a slightly redacted memo about it. There’s inner office politics in other memos.
The world building is absolutely amazing if you choose to be patient and read everything you can.
Yeah I’m usually not a lore guy in games but man, this game did it amazingly well.
I just completed Control Resonate and I was happy to see they kept that level of detail in the sequel.
The piecemeal storytelling is very much like they did ot Horizon Zero Dawn.
One of the best intros to a video game. Everything is designed as a specific narrative hook that really wants you to draw you in as much as possible. Even if you don’t want to follow all of them, you will be incredibly curious about some of them.
The director pictures at the beginning really got me.
I never got tired of the basic powers, breaking and throwing stuff always satisfying.

This is one of the few games I’ve played where I’m constantly hoping to find new random scraps of paper. One of the most interesting places to explore.
Every paper I’ve found so far had such a cool little story snipped, I love it
You’re not late, you are a Patient gamer :D
Still in my pile of shame xD
