I always recognized that it sounded off but I didn’t realize why until recently. It’s because it’s dehumanizing. “The blacks/the gays/the Jews” vs “black people/gay people/Jewish people” carries a sense of otherness, or less than. It’s amazing how such a small differnce in verbiage can change the whole tone of a sentence.
