Provide better public options. It takes me 25 minutes to get to work by car and 75 minutes by public. Fuck that.
Most likely I’ll live the rest of my life not owning a car, using public transport, mainly.
If most of the humans were decent I would be absolutely furious that people still use cars to get to work.
Most humans are absolutely disgusting. Smoking right under the no smoking sign at the stop, blasting TikToks, shitty (or, in fairness, any kind of) music from their phone speakers, getting on the tube without a mask while coughing, sneezing at everyone in the crowded carriage, taking up two seats just because why not either by placing their stuff on the seat or just manspreading, having phone conversations on loudspeakers… I could go on forever.
I will keep using public transport till I kick the bucket, but FUCK I totally understand everyone who prefers to have their own private space.
I say not less cars, but no cars. We need to move towards societies where we arent dependent on the asphalt industry.
We need to learn how to live slow again.

Im curious what people here would take to work. A 20 minute drive or an hour bike ride. Buses don’t exist near me nor will they. What are my options. It’s too hot, the weather is unpredictable, and im not spending an hour one way to work.
In a well designed urban society, cars will be the slowest mode of transport.

People would in general change either their living place or place of work to be about a half hour’s trip. That would take some time sure, but people mostly aren’t going to bike an hour every day for many of the same reasons they don’t drive an hour every day.
i dont want people commuting to jobs everyday that are 10km away. i dont want that to be typical. just my thoughts on the matter
An hour ebike ride most days would be what I’d opt for. Doesn’t matter if its like 100° and high humidity and a thunderstorm just means its a cooler bike ride.
In all honesty, I would probably drive in your situation, though I might invest in a folding bike/e-bike I can toss in the trunk. It’s crazy how small those things are now! They had some Urtopias at the local bike shop last time I swung by, and I swear they fold up smaller than most adult scooters I’ve seen.
Fwiw my commute is about 35 min by regular bike, 25 by e-bike, 15 by car if the traffic is light (that’s a big if), or around 45 by bus. E-bike is my preferred option.

Yes. And this is easy to solve with decreased birth rates. People die naturally and populations reduce significantly on their own on fairly short periods of time

So many cities could be made completely car-free.
Just force people to park near the edge and use alternative transport from there. This would give city centers the space to be greener and safer to live in.
Especially in Europe this should be fairly easy. Some cities are pushing towards this too. Not sure if American cities are suited sadly enough, as many of them are built with cars in mind.
