They are replacing the lightning with a model that has a smaller battery for in town driving and a generator to charge the battery. Sounds perfect for your use case.

They’re not for everyone. Not yet.
I was hyped about the rear plugs on the lightning. Camping and recharging power tool batteries would’ve been great.
They make a hybrid with the same plugs. Even more useful, really.
