First off we’ve had deepfakes for years so he could just claim that. Secondly, and this is more important, Trump’s base wouldn’t care anyway. Anyway, while Russian media is all more or less under Putin’s control, that doesn’t mean they’re always necessarily saying the same things he’s saying. If Trump’s having 90 minutes phone calls with Putin, I’m fairly sure he’s not getting ridiculed. Likely Putin talks to him like an equal - to his face, anyway. And being seen as an equal by your hero can pretty much blind you with emotions.
Being able to get away with anything is vastly different than being able to handle criticism and embarrassment associated with (yet another) scandal, especially something of a more personal nature that draws his “character” into question among his base.
