Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy quadratic expansion and always give it a few shots before resorting to the formula.

They’re the coefficients of a quadratic equation! Y = ax^2 + bx + c
0 = ax^2 + bx + c
Oh true!
They are all superfluous if you know how to do quadratic expansion.
