I’ve never noticed the “Gen Z stare”, maybe I’m just not a shitty customer.
This feels like just another example of “the younger generation has no respect, in my day we respected our elders” that’s been a part of society since we’ve had society.
I started asking people that express these kinds of opinions if they themselves have witnessed what they’re claiming. Sadly, they all say yes and I’ve stopped believing them.
See now, I believe that they’ve seen a stare from service industry workers, but I’d bet it’s the “dealing with assholes” dead-eyed stare, which is multigenerational. If they say they see it everywhere they’re telling on themselves.
I’ve never gotten it from Gen Z, but I have got the “can this antisocial ass bitch get a sentence out” stare from older workers
That’s exactly what I’m getting at, too. If “Gen Z is lazy and doesn’t want to work”, maybe it’s missing a “with you”. I’ve not experienced any of the usual claims.
I’ve been living the opposite. I work with some Gen Z and I’ll say things assuming they agree with me like “If your raise doesn’t beat inflation it’s a pay cut”, “If your job sucks, steal anything you can like an office chair” and “Why the hell would you ever want work email on your phone”. They tend to respond with some version of “But what about the company?”
What about the company? Burn that mother down. The you from 15 years from now would be disappointed.

I always thought of this as basically the customer service thousand yard stare of being constantly subjected to inane drudgery and also an endless stream of the most ludicrous freaks of brain damaged customers.
I saw this a lot as a millenial, amongst those of us who’d served too much time in such jobs.
But uh, yeah, now the economy is even more fucked, and these are largely the only jobs Gen Z can get…
And this is also the only context many older people actually physically interact with Gen Z in, as customer service robots.
So… I guess it ‘makes sense’ that the idiots that used to be writing: ‘Millenials are ruining the XYZ industry’ are now just entirely unable to realize what they’ve done to Gen Z.

- earned enough to afford a home
- had enough money to even hav children or som leisure things
- had a feeling thad my work accomplishes something (beyond money for my boss)
