World News@lemmy.world•2 studies warn 'Day After Tomorrow' ocean current is in troubleEnglish
8·3 months agoAt the time of the film’s release, it offered a new theory about what could happen to Earth’s climate in the future. Sure many scientist just laughed to this scenario. The funny thing is that AMOC research started in the same year. All we have is data from 2004 to the present, of course that is not enough to draw conclusions about our future climate.
Earth’s climate is complex, studying AMOC alone is not enough. And one of the biggest problem is that there are other MOCs, not just AMOC, any changes to AMOC will impact other MOCs. And there is a new research called the SAMOC Initiative started 5 yr ago.

4·5 months agoIn our country, we use QR code payments. Currently, we have agreements to use this payment method with several countries in Asia. But it’s still infuriating because most online payment and banking apps require Google Play Services.

World News@lemmy.world•Iranians use Turkey border to access internet during blackoutsEnglish
1·6 months agoyeah it’s not easy, but doable. It takes a lot of effort if you have an authoritarian government., and the Iranian government is a very bad example. Probably they should be more serious, reorganize and develop strategies to fight the government, because demonstrations are ineffective.
And communications is very important for this, that’s why the Iranian government (as well as other authoritarian governments) wants to cut off internet connections.

World News@lemmy.world•Woman fined £150 for pouring coffee down drainEnglish
5·9 months agoThis story is really poor and badly reported, as it doesn’t explain WHY the Environmental Protection Act 1990 has these fines in place and why what this women did was wrong. Instead it’s a clickbait story that implies the woman is a victim.
That has already been explained in the article. 👀
Section 33 of the Environmental Protection Act 1990 makes it an offence to deposit or dispose of waste in a way likely to pollute land or water, including pouring liquids into street drains.

2·10 months agoIt isn’t the free-meals-programme that’s the problem, it’s the implimentation of it that’s the problem.
It’s already a problem since begining, costing up to 1 trillion rupiah or 60 million US dollars per day. And the money flows to high-ranking officers and officials through foundations that have kitchens that cook free meals.
