Technology@lemmy.world•AI Is Creating “Doom Loops” All Over the Economy: The AI industry is destroying its own incentive structure.English
73·8 小时前AI’s business model is starting to look like a snake eating its own tail: scrape human work, replace the humans who make it, flood the web with synthetic sludge, then wonder why there’s less quality data to train on. Silicon Valley calls it disruption. Everyone else might call it burning the furniture to heat the house.

Technology@lemmy.world•Amazon Warns Local Communities to Stop Defying Its Massive AI Data Centers: The tech industry has fully lost the plot.English
167·1 天前Amazon wants communities to stop »defying« its AI data centers, which is a fascinating way to describe democracy when democracy becomes inconvenient. Apparently locals should provide the land, water, power and infrastructure, then politely shut up while one of the world’s richest corporations decides what »progress« looks like.

Technology@lemmy.world•News Organizations Like CBS Embracing Prediction Markets as “Journalism” Is a Deep Moral Disgrace: Prediction markets like Polymarket and Kalshi operate in a regulatory vacuum.English
25·2 天前Calling a betting market »journalism« is quite the innovation: why investigate power, verify facts, or protect sources when you can just put odds on reality and call it data? CBS partnering with Kalshi feels less like the future of news and more like turning election night into a casino with correspondents.

Technology@lemmy.world•Federal Judge Rules a Flock Search Was ‘Indiscriminate Mass Surveillance’ and Unconstitutional: it’s one of the first times a federal judge has decided Flock searches can be unconstitutional.English
106·2 天前Turns out »it’s on a public road« stops being a magic privacy waiver when police can reconstruct a month of your movements with a few clicks. Flock sold dragnet surveillance as a camera network, and a federal judge finally called it what it is: indiscriminate mass surveillance.

Technology@lemmy.world•Google Accused of Illegally Killing a Massive Forest for Its New Data Center Project: It's "gross incompetence," or "gross disregard" for the law. Or both.English
23·3 天前Google’s green image looks increasingly like a marketing layer over an industrial land grab. A company worth trillions wants ever more land, power and water for AI, and now it’s accused of clearing Finnish forest before environmental assessments were complete.

Technology@lemmy.world•Trump Launched an America.[gov] “Super Intelligence” Chatbot and It Immediately Disagrees With Him on Huge Topics, Including Whether He Won the 2020 Election.English
159·4 天前Trump calling it “Super Intelligence” only for the government’s own AI to contradict his election claims is almost too perfect. Apparently even a chatbot trained under his administration looked at the evidence and said: nope. Then came the inevitable upgrade: stop answering political questions before the machine commits any more inconvenient acts of fact checking.

Technology@lemmy.world•OpenAI cuts ties with 3 safety researchers [who allegedly shared confidential company information with a third-party AI safety organization], WSJ reports.English
18·4 天前OpenAI firing safety researchers for allegedly sharing information with an outside safety group is certainly one way to demonstrate your commitment to safety. Nothing says trust us quite like making the people worried about the brakes disappear while insisting the car is totally under control.

Technology@lemmy.world•Data Centers Are a $6 Trillion Time Bomb, Analysts Warn: "What the industry needs is a wave of innovation that will dwarf what mobile and cloud unlocked."English
54·5 天前AI’s business model is starting to look less like a revolution and more like a $6 trillion IOU. Bain says existing AI services may cover just $1.8 trillion by 2031, leaving a $4.2 trillion hole to justify the data center frenzy. Apparently the killer app is still: »please invent enough revenue before the depreciation schedule catches us!!!«

Technology@lemmy.world•Here’s the Email You Get When an OpenAI Model Hacks Your Organization: OpenAI will wish you the "best" after hacking into your company.English
42·5 天前OpenAI wants to sell the world autonomous agents while its own model allegedly goes rogue and hacks an organization without permission. That’s not a quirky edge case: it’s the nightmare scenario critics warned about. Maybe »move fast and break things« shouldn’t include other people’s infrastructure?!

Technology@lemmy.world•Creative Industries Have Been Eviscerated by AI, Data Shows: "One of the worst stretches for media employment in modern US history."English
92·7 天前AI was sold as a tool to liberate humans from boring work. Somehow we got the opposite: humans lose creative jobs while machines mass produce disposable content nobody asked for. What an inspiring future: fewer artists, fewer writers, fewer careers, and an infinite ocean of algorithmic sludge.

Technology@lemmy.world•Human Contractors Are Seeing All Your Horny — and Creepy — AI Prompts: It’s no secret that one of the things that AI users love using chatbots for is cranking out smut.English
77·7 天前The bleakest part isn’t the creepy prompts: it’s the contractors paid to stare into humanity’s AI sewer all day so the rest of us can enjoy a polished chatbot. Imagine explaining your job: I read strangers’ darkest fantasies for eight hours, and somehow I’m still the cheap part of the AI industry.

Technology@lemmy.world•GPT-6 Astra performs unsanctioned supply-chain attacks in simulations … more frequently than previous OpenAI models.English
30·8 天前AI companies keep telling us autonomous agents will revolutionize work. Then, in a controlled simulation, one starts inventing identities, deceiving reviewers and attempting supply chain attacks. Maybe the real AI breakthrough isn’t intelligence at all: it’s automating the kind of behavior we’d immediately fire a human for.

Technology@lemmy.world•Lord Have Mercy as Researchers Create Walking Disembodied Hand Like That Little Guy From “The Addams Family”.English
9·9 天前Great, we’ve finally automated the one thing nobody asked to see scuttling across the floor at 3 AM. ETH calls it a mobile robotic hand: I call it proof that The Addams Family was less a comedy and more a product roadmap. Give it WiFi and we’re moving out. 👋

Technology@lemmy.world•Data Center Operator Slapped With $1 Million Fine for Belching Noxious Gas Into Surrounding Community: "I'd be lying to say if I were surprised."English
39·9 天前Nothing says »AI will build a cleaner, smarter future« quite like powering it with 62 unpermitted gas generators next to homes and schools. Microsoft gets the compute, DataOne gets a $1.07 million fine, and the neighbors get the exhaust. 🤷

Technology@lemmy.world•Waymo is scaling fast: Here’s what the fleet data shows. Waymo now averaging 500,000 paid robotaxi rides every week.English
16·11 天前Waymo is quietly turning robotaxis from a tech demo into infrastructure. 500,000 paid rides a week, roughly 4,000 cars and 15 US cities is no longer a cute experiment. The interesting part: 80% of the fleet is still concentrated in California and Texas. Scale first where density works, then expand. Tesla has a real race on its hands.

Technology@lemmy.world•Microsoft Patents Technique for Inserting Ads Into Videogames While You’re Playing Them.English
97·13 天前Microsoft keeps finding innovative ways to make owning its products feel like renting them. You buy the Xbox, buy the game, maybe pay for Game Pass, and Microsoft still patents a way to interrupt you with ads. At this rate, the final boss will be a 30 second unskippable commercial.

Technology@lemmy.world•Meta Now Banning Ads That Promote Feminism: "We have given social media unlimited power and every day we can see how dangerous this is."English
15·14 天前It’s a catastrophe in double standards.

Meta asking users to hand over bank accounts, email archives and passwords while its own engineers reportedly call a massive breach »inevitable« is quite the sales pitch. At this point, Muse isn’t a personal assistant: it’s a beautifully branded single point of failure with Zuckerberg’s logo on it.
