I’ve been tired of hearing about this guy for over twenty years now.
He’s always been a douchebag, always spouting controversial things to get a pathetic little thrill.

I kind of like it, but I like pretty much every concept car interior!
But at first I had the exact same reaction.

I find this fascinating because no one has ever said anything about my car. I was actually worried they would before I got an EV, because of stories like this.
But I’ve had the car for six years now and I have only had pleasant interactions about it.
They are extremely common here though, so that might be partly why.
In fact, once I thought an elderly man was going to ask something snarky. He said “hey, can I ask about your car?” and then he very kindly asked about what the brake calipers were, because he literally had no idea. Then he said “it’s a really pretty car” and then I felt mentally bad for doubting the sweet old guy.

September 6th: “Programming is Art.” and it’s 100% upvotes.
Like, literally what the top comment on this post says.
Shameless.
If I asked an AI to write a text on the topic “Programming is art”, that thought process wouldn’t happen. I wouldn’t experience the same emotions that come with writing it myself. For me, writing is art that I pursue regardless of money. I think people who enjoy writing code feel the same way.
Huh. The turnaround given the top comment here is interesting.

It is. It’s craftsmanship.
Just because it’s digital doesn’t mean it can’t be done thoughtfully.

I’m pretty sure the only requirement of a thought-terminating cliche is that they are
intended to end an argument and bypass cognitive dissonance with a cliché rather than a point
It genuinely doesn’t matter what Heidegger’s human-tool gestalt says if people are using “it’s just a tool” as a thought-terminating cliche.
The reason it sounded like a thought-terminating cliche to me was this part of the article itself:
What this response seems to mean is the following:
- The technology being discussed has no bearing on the attitudes or ideologies of the person holding it: use or non-use is ideologically neutral.
- The technology being discussed can be effectively separated from the people using it: nothing can be inferred about a person from the technologies that they use.
- The technology is used fully consciously: you are always fully aware that you are using a technology and have complete volitional freedom to use a different technology at any time.
- The technology does not influence the kinds of things likely to be done with it: use of the technology doesn’t tend to encourage one course of action over another (“guns don’t kill people, people do”).
They’re describing aspects that are cliche and constructed to not have a point.

Really good article.
There’s a term for phrases like “it’s just a tool”: thought-terminating clichés.
A thought-terminating cliché is a form of loaded language – often passing as folk wisdom – intended to end an argument and bypass cognitive dissonance with a cliché rather than a point.
I appreciate knowing the names of things because it makes them easier to identify and discuss.
The fact that you took my comment as “patronizing” says everything I need to know about you.
I hope you continue to have the day you deserve somewhere else.
Genuinely: go be angry at supportive comments somewhere else!
This is just art, buddy.
You don’t have to be autistic to enjoy making art.
Edited to add that for the 0.1% of people who thought this was “patronizing,” it was intended to be supportive.
“This is just art, man. Everyone can make art, you don’t have to qualify it by saying it’s autistic.”
No one has to be apologetic about making art.
But keep being angry!

Yes it is!
Apparently it’s a still from the 1981 TV miniseries The Mansions of America.

Indeed!
According to the Wikipedia article,
Other names such as Klinton and Madeleine, from U.S. President Bill Clinton and U.S. Secretary of State Madeleine Albright respectively, are also popular in Kosovo for similar reasons.
I find this kind of navel-gazing so cringey, because this literally happens every 5-10 years. I remember when “hipsters” became a big thing, and that was at least two “tech workers are moving to farms” cycles ago.
This is an awful article.
Among my Knowledge Worker peers, I am hearing this more and more often: people who want to pick up pottery, painting, crochet or other old-timey analog hobbies
I wonder why he thinks this is such a big, revolutionary thing?

Sure, Jan.

Hold on, if you’re going to make it multiple choice you gotta do all of the nicknames for weed too.

Companies may send emails to [companyname]@noreply.net or similar variations believing they aren’t going anywhere, or could not be monitored in any way. Broadly it’s also possible that they may transform a person’s individual email address to send to one of these placeholder style domains if someone leaves a company or deletes their account.
Damn. People are genuinely stupid.

The best part about this is that cars with combustion engines are worse for the environment in every way, just like adding lead to gasoline was.
No one cared about lead gasoline until corporations were forced to remove the it because of changing environmental standards in the 1970s.
Literally no one cared that it made a generation or two stupid. Or caused a bunch of other issues.
Because, after all, it saved them money! It helped their engines run great.
Sounds familiar, doesn’t it?

It’s never about range. People who want fossil fuel cars will always find a reason to use one.
It’s about maintaining their own personal status quo, it has nothing to do with practicality.

The Vancouver Canucks have had riots for the 1994 and 2011 Stanley Cup finals, because the city can’t handle success.
As a mild correction, Canucks fans actually can’t handle failure. Which is much worse!
The last two times they’ve been in the Stanley Cup final, they lost in game 7 and the entitled fans rioted like crybabies.
