  • I’m not a doctor. I was a medic for 15 years. Generally we, (at least I did), always try to explain things if there is time. But the time I have to explain what’s happening and why can be in very short supply as a medic. Sometimes it’s an “Oh shit! We gotta go! We gotta go NOW!” moment. Plus it’s just you and me in the back. So I was often busier than a one handed milk maid at milking time and had very little time for pleasantries.

And doctors face their own time crunch. If you have ever paid attention to the scheduling your appointment, they are in 15 minute blocks. And then they need to be on to the next patient while trying to find the time to chart their encounter with you. There are few of them and an endless supply of patients. And they need to keep that assembly line moving. If they spent as much time with their patients as THEY would like, imagine how long you would be sitting in that waiting room. You better bring drinks and a sandwich. Possibly a blanket.

And there ain’t any medical system that has enough doctors anywhere on this planet either to make things better for the doctors or the patients.

  • Yep. Even as a mere medic, we are supposed to at least consider any woman from 9 to 99 could be pregnant. And it fast and easy to ask, assuming a responsive patient. The overwhelming number of times it didn’t play into my treatment plan doesn’t matter. All it takes is just one time to not consider it and someone can be severely injured or dead because I didn’t consider it. If I had any doubt about pregnant or not, I asked the patient straight up.

  • Languages are living things. And living things always change. Note the Great English Vowel Change. Even the Norwegian my Grandfather spoke and that I learned from him was virtually a dead language that modern Norwegians stopped using in the 1850s. And the English spoken in the UK is different than the American English I speak. Spanish spoken in Spain isn’t the same as someone from Mexico speaks.

And when conversing with someone, (in the language of your choice), the words you choose to use are defined by the context you use them in. Words can have multiple meanings, but it’s the context and tone clarifies those meanings. Consider all the meanings of the single word ‘fuck’.

But problems start with written words. And many people have poor written communication skills. It can be hard to parse meaning from poorly written words because there is little context and tone that comes through with a typed sentence.

We are all just baying at the moon like any pack. And hoping some understands us.

  • Oh, that’s easy. A liter is what you buy bottled water by and you buy soda pop in 2 liter bottles. Wine and whisk(e)y is 750ml bottles. It’s also the displacement of your car’s engine. Though we use cc’s for chainsaws and motorcycles, weird I know.

So Americans are well familiar with a liter.

  • And I don’t want any of your shit.

I grew up on dairy farm and it was one of my chores to shove the shit and then spread that shit nearly everyday. So I’ve had enough shit. I’m so done with that shit and the assholes it came out of. And I don’t need anyone giving me shit anymore either.

So you just keep your shit to yourself.

  • Yep. They get so bent out of shape when they complain about all the trump signs and flags that every one of them should have a sign next to them that says these maga signs are partially brought to you by the Minnesota State DFL.

In less than one generation, they totally destroyed generations worth of good will and votes by deciding that it is cheaper and easier to buy votes in the large metropolitan area of this state. Why drive 300+ miles in February to eat cold catered chicken and shake hands with a dirty finger nailed miner or logger when you can buy, (and yes, buying it is), all the votes cheaper and easier right out your front door that are needed to run this state.

Hell, I asked the DFL for a few pamphlets to place on a table at my county fair. I got told there was no money for it…Fcuking “Liberals”.

  • Reading the comments, it would seem most everyone here thinks that the usefulness of the steam is done when it gets used to turn a turbine at high pressure.

The steam can be used for much more than once. In the 1800’s and early 1900s when steam ran trains and ships, they built double and triple expansion engines that took the energy of the steam two and three times before it was done. It doesn’t need to be one and done. And when the energy is done being harvested for power generation, it can used for other things. Engineers today aren’t dumber than the ones in the 1800s.

I can remember a small rural Minnesota town that had their own coal fired electric plant. (Built back before the REA was a thing). They took the left over steam from power generation and then piped it to around 200 homes in the town and heated them with the leftover steam. While a bit costly to install, it was dirt cheap to run. Those homes lost all that when the power plant was shut down and they had to switch to either natural gas, fuel oil, LP, or electricity.

So don’t get hung up on just the power generation. Think what could be beyond that point.

  • Ahhhh, you ain’t old yet. I got tennis shoes older than you. Literally. I still have a pair of original Converse tennis shoes I bought when I was playing basketball in high school back in the 1970s. Why I still have them, I don’t know. But they are still in my closet along with a slide rule I used for math classes.

That’s a good indication of old age. Having things and memories that were once commonplace, but are now totally obsolete.

  • You have a great sentiment that I whole heartedly agree with.

There is just one problem I see: the word “do.”

Everyone wants to bitch, piss, and moan. But, very, very few are willing to “do” anything meaningful about the need for “do” in their community. It’s always someone else’s job or I don’t have time or I could never do that.

I’m an old boomer now. I’ve spent my time “doing” things for my community because those things needed to be done and no other people wanted to do them. I just want Millennials, GenX, and GenY or Z step into these things and bring their skills and perspectives to our community. We need them. And I just want to finish the remaining 10 years or so of my life and fade quietly away. But that hasn’t happened yet, I have a Township Board meeting this Thursday evening…

  • That harsh ride mostly comes from the tire and shock absorber set they had than just being a bad ride. If his pavement princess was setup to be to “manly” it would suck to ride in.

You would find my Dodge Hemi a nasty harsh ride also. But I have stiff tires and heavy duty shocks for when I tow a 24,000lbs/1100kg trailer with heavy loads. It’s not a ride you want to take for a long distance for sure but necessary for the usage.
