I’m looking for a just a mono speaker wireless headset with mic for work calls with my laptop. I had been using a plantronics 2.4Ghz headset for years that worked really great but it’s on its last leg.
Trying to find something similar that isn’t Bluetooth but it seems these kind of headsets are few and far between. Does anyone have any recommendations?
What you need is a DECT headset, Jabra makes several models, as does Yealink and HP.
HP sells the headsets under the Poly and Savi brands, these are the same headset series that Plantronics used to make, I remember how weird is was that Plantronics was first bought by Polycom who became Poly, only to almost immediately after that got bought by HP.
I miss Plantronics, HP have gutted the series, I miss my CS540, and later a modern variant that worked directly with a computer and didn’t need a special freak cable. But my hearing has got worse and I like my stereo Jabra headset at work.
I am actually considering buying a Jabra Engage 75 SE, though a 45 SE would be brilliant as well.
Good info! Thank you! I miss plantronics too!
What are your hangups about Bluetooth? I used to hate the thought of it and only used wired. I then had to get a pair during a trip because nothing else was available and never went back. The battery life on those things is a non issue and the freedom you get from not being tethered is huge. Just saying.
Fair question and it’s rather petty but I would like to be able to walk away from my computer to ky kitchen while still on the phone. It seems that gets me just out of BT range enough to where I lose connectivity.
Do you think it could be the headset’s Bluetooth range that’s the issue? Maybe another headset with a better chip may have better range?
I bought some really cheap Bluetooth headphones off AliExpress that did that to me. I was at the gym and it would constantly lose range just having them in my ears and my phone seated on the treadmill’s tray area, just above my waist and I’m not a tall person at all lol. Compared to other Bluetooth headsets like AirPods or Beats earbuds that had a much larger range and didn’t behave that way.
The problem is there’s no standardized way (that I’m aware of) of guaranteeing BT range above 10 meters/33ft. Devices can promise extended range, but you can’t hold them to it and there’s no way of knowing just how far to expect.
A long while back, I remember seeing antenna hacks to boost range, but I imagine that’s difficult to implement for those not so inclined to such mucking about.
The only downside is the audio quality being in the sewer.
That depends on the codecs supported by the device. Even my cheap as headset brought in the last couple of years supports the high quality codecs these days.
I had no idea there are WiFi headsets. That’s really cool! Sorry I can’t help though…
Not WiFi, they use a proprietary radio protocol that uses the wifi frequencies as they are freeuse. They also make your 2.4G wifi worse due to that fact.
Depending on what that last leg is, how about a repair for that old Plantronics?
Also check local thrift stores.
