I’ve been using Duck DNS happily for years but it’s been down more than up for the last month for me and I think it’s time to switch.

Ah my bad. Doesn’t show up when you search DDNS, I guess it wasn’t mentioned in the post at all.

I couldn’t get my head around DDNS when I started out, so I ended up renting a dirt cheap VPS and running a wireguard tunnel from my homeserver. I think I pay ~$3 a month for the VPS, where I also run the reverse proxy for my services (Caddy).

Cons: I’m not completely self sufficient Pros: My machine is not exposed directly to the net, and it was laughably simple to set up.

Unless you need to allow public access, you could consider if something like Tailscale would fulfill your requirements too.

Seriously the amount of times tailscale is mentioned I this community, I start to think it’s just a big ad.

If it is only me who accesses it, I can just use WireGuard with a dyndns, it’s easy enough to setup and does not rely on some company.

If I want others to access it, tailscale is just another hurdle to them.

It is all wireguard in the end, if you want to set that up manually then go for it. And you can self host headscale if you want to maintain that, but I think just using the free version of tailscale does fulfill a use case where dyndns used to dominate, which is accessing a lab or home network from a few specific devices in your own control. I see a greater risk in keeping a public exposure for remote access than from Tailscale causing an incident for that specific purpose.

If it is meant for public hosting that goes out the window of course. Tailscale has something for that but I have not used it. This is all my honest recommendation, I have no affiliation.

I use Mythic Beasts as my domain registrar, they have a DDNS API endpoint. Nice design, you can basically just ping it with your public key to update the DDNS entry to your origin IP (or manually set it in the request, if you want to introduce another point of failure).

I have a cron job that runs every 15 minutes that hits that endpoint, literally just a one-liner script. I have never understood why everyone is using entire libraries for such a simple operation.

namecheap is the registrar I use, and ddclient works with them. Been using it for like 10 years.

Another thing I do is log the public IP address of my laptop and my home into syncthing every 5 minutes.

I use no-ip because that was one of the few my router back then many, many, many years ago supported out-of-the-box and there was never a reason to change…
