Like when you set it to English in ya profile Settings you get this error message: “Warning: If you deselect Undetermined, you will not see most content.”.

When you post, when you make communities, that setting is everywhere and it’s just confusing the hell outta me and I’m scared to select English anywhere tbh

When I had it on English, I couldn’t even see any replies and comments at all anymore. Took me like a week to figure out why! 😱

Left this post on “Select language”, but when I added these last 2 sentences with the “Edit” option, without changing anything about the language, it gave me this error “Language not allowed” and I had to switch it to “English”.

After changing the language to “English” I was unable to see it from the 2 crossposts or the profile page. Like you can only see the crossposts from the original post, but the original post is not visible from the crossposts ;)

Had to press the “X”-button next to “Undetermined” to make comments and the “English” post appear again.

The point is that there is a choice of languages when you post (on many platforms), but about nobody uses this feature, and the choice is set to “Undetermined” on nearly all posts, making this feature useless.

Most people do not bother to set the language , so the “Undetermined” setting let’s you see those posts and such. Ideally, set visible languages to Undetermined, English, and other languages of your choice.

Dunno what client you’re using, but yeah. When using Thunder, it for some reason frequently switches to “Undetermined” whenever I edit a comment. When I try to submit that edit with that language choice, I get a “language not allowed” error & have to change it to “no language” to get it to work. Kinda bizarre.

I’d have switched to Voyager by now if it didn’t have the incredibly annoying fault whereby if you accidentally open the left panel that lets you choose your feed or a specific community, then you cannot just close it again - you are FORCED to make a selection that then reloads your feed & you lose your place in what you were scrolling through already. I’ve complained about it, but they don’t seem to care.

Have you tried either Summit or Blorp?

Summit is my favourite pick, but Blorp is fantastic and was that for Lemmy for quite a while before switching. Summit feels a bit more modern and clean to me.

Tried Blorp a while back, but didn’t like it - don’t remember why. Will try Summit - thx for the recommendation!

If you forget to select a language when making a post, the language becomes “undetermined.”

The vast majority of people do not take the time to mark the language of their post, and so Lemmy files them under “undetermined” because there is no language information.

When making a post, when you choose the “Undetermined” from the language-selector, it just pops it back to asking you to select a language, because the point of “Undetermined” is that no language metadata has been added.

So in your user settings page, if you remove “Undetermined” from your list of languages, you will not see most posts since most people do not actually choose a language for their post.

I personally do not find this confusing at all.

tbh I think the backend software itself should prompt you to select a default language on signup and choose not to specify should be an option or multiple should be an option for people who really just post in multiple languages. that way people who are either monolingual or just do most of their interaction in one language (probably a great majority of users) can have their posts auto tagged.

(I’m not OP) Okay - not confusing, but annoying AF. In Thunder at least, “undetermined” is an option for filtering posts that you see, but it often switches to that by itself when making an edit & when that’s selected upon submitting an edit it complains that language isn’t allowed - yet it’ll accept the separate “no language” option. WTF?
