What does “rule” mean? Is there any common theme to what is posted there? Is it humor? Is it a massive Reddit inside joke?

I think this is what being a Boomer must feel like.

    196 is an older subreddit that has no rules except one: you have to post an image before leaving. A lot of posts are titled “rule” as in they’re following the rule by posting something.

    Obviously it’s more of a joke than a serious rule, so it’s quickly devolved into a place for random assortments of memes and weird images.

    There rule is that you have to post something before you leave. I’m not sure why it’s called 196 though…

      I believe there was formerly a subreddit called 195, and 196 is the successor of that. Idk why the previous one was called 195.
