Explanation: Just a humorous note that after two 17th century European soldiers were sentenced to execution, their sentencing included docking their final month’s pay as well. Had to add insult to (lethal) injury, it would seem!
If they had heirs that would have inherited said pay, that insult is also injurious to said heirs. But on the surface, it does sound petty and absurd! Hard to say, though, without additional context…

It is probably to pay for the expenses of the trial, imprisonment and execution.
That makes sense, too. It is a fascinating bit of trivia, I think, because there’s so many possible layers to what was going on.
And, of course, how absurd it sounds on that first read!
