Explanation: After WW1, the Triple Entente (or what remained of it) organized a plebescite to return North Schleswig to Denmark.
Obviously the war didn’t start over this - but it’s a little funny to think that it was all waged just so Denmark, who didn’t even participate in the war, could get a bit of land back.
Denmark got more prize for doing nothing, than Italy and Japan who participated in the war. The Western powers seem to be so good at creating their own enemies later on…
On 15 June 1920, Northern Schleswig was officially reunited with Denmark. It is the only one of the transfers of German territory after World War I that the Nazis did not dispute.

The Nazis couldn’t give a shit about it as well! What a strange piece of land.
Denmark was offered the whole territory after WW1, but declined and had a referendum which divided the territory very cleanly by ethnicity and along cultural and linguistic lines.
In a saner world, it would serve as a model for resolving disputes about land.
Bulgarians, Italians, and Americans made the cut but not Ottomans?
No Togolese or Namibians either.
