Explanation: In WW1, the Kingdom of Italy introduced an infantry-portable automatic weapon known as the Villar Perosa, consisting of two light automatic firearms literally combined into one. Twice the barrels, twice the firepower? At this early and experimental point in portable automatic weapons, the Villar Perosa was surprisingly effective in its role as what-we-would-recognize-as a submachinegun.

The opposing Austro-Hungarian Empire realized it needed a response to this weapon, so created the Sturmpistole, which was… two fully-automatic pistols slapped together. It was not as effective as the Villar Perosa, so generally Austro-Hungarian forces preferred to use captured Italian submachineguns instead of their own, lmao.

If our gun was so good, why did we get beat up so bad for most of the war? And don’t tell me it was nepotism and connections among higher officials.

Luigi just wanted to see the Isonzo River run red with Italian blood.

Also, and this may be controversial, but gun alone not win war 😔

Also also, the Mannlicher was a superior rifle to the Carcano, fite me

… it’s also a bit bizarre how the Italian government initially tried to suppress specialist assault troops, out of fear that having an elite would ‘demoralize’ or create quarrelsome competition with regional regiments. Despite the fact that the Arditi were utter lunatics who could pull of just the kind of stunts that were needed to break trench stalemates… and that the Germans, Austrians, Brits, and French had all already proven that assault troops were invaluable in trench warfare, and were expanding their use at that same time.
