Real talk for a sec - what can US citizens be doing right now to support Venezuela and hamper Trump’s power grabs?

Obviously people are already protesting - I’m planning on going to one tomorrow - but in the face of something this big a protest just doesn’t seem like enough.

Besides protesting, the most effective non-violent actions we can take is to organize a General Strike, joining your local mutual aid groups, and reading Full Spectrum Resistance for more details.

The country would be brought to its knees if suddenly deprived of profit and labor. That tactic was extremely effective in Chile in 2019, and had they not fallen for the trick of liberal reform, they would’ve had a successful revolution on their hands with virtually no bloodshed.

If you aren’t in a union (or even if you are, it’s worth dual-carding), please consider joining the IWW to unionize your workplace (bonus: you’ll get higher wages, better benefits, and more time off if you succeed!) to strengthen a general strike if we manage to enact one, as most unions have a strike fund that can supplement your income during a general strike to make it more financially bearable (you should also save as much money as you can reasonably do, so it can also be used to keep yourself afloat during a strike).

And for our international friends, you should join one as well, as fascism is gaining momentum globally. If your country isn’t listed below, just contact the IWW directly in the link above, and they’ll help you set up a new local branch.

I downloaded full spectrum resistance and I’ll be reading it over the next few days. Thanks for letting me know about it!

I don’t really know much about unions but I’ll look into them

Thanks for the heads up! The Wayback machine shows their site was working a few months ago, so hopefully they get it back up soon. In the meantime, the joining page on the wayback machine says you can contact info@asf-iwa.org.au to join up, which is hopefully still an active email. The Wayback link also shows links to their Facebook pages (unfortunate choice of platform), which are still active.

            Thanks for sending this through

This is gonna sound harsh, but if the Facebook is active but the website isn’t, then I’m probably not gonna bother.

I’m organising within my union in conjuction with other left leaning orgs (don’t wish to share which one for privacy).

Really appreciate your work in sharing these resources though and taking the time to find the archive links and emails for those interested.

Hey, just wanted to give you a heads up that the ASF-IWA’s website maintenance appears to be complete and the website is fully functioning again, so it seems it was indeed only down for a short time from what I can tell. Definitely worth shooting them an email since they seem to be active :D

If I had to guess, their Facebook pages are likely intended to extend their outreach to non-unionized people who may not know to look for the website.

Obviously people are already protesting - I’m planning on going to one tomorrow - but in the face of something this big a protest just doesn’t seem like enough.

This is just my own stupid ramble, so feel free to ignore it, but the main problem with protesting is that the American left (and most of the western world) has deluded itself into believing that protesting is a goal on its own, like: ‘if enough people show up and wave a flag, people in power will listen and things will solve themselves’, as if it was some magic ritual. That’s highly ineffective, if whoever is in power can ignore a protest and wait for everyone to go home, that’s exactly what they’ll do.

For a protest to be effective, it needs to be threatening. ‘There’s a lot of us and we’re angry at what you’re doing. If you don’t listen, we’ll start using force’.

      Join a union!

Yeah, I get that protests/rallies are more a show of solidarity than actual action. That’s why I asked the question! I’ll definitely be sniffing around to see what the unions are up to, although US unions are pretty toothless at the moment :(

I am told water and electricity generation are important yet mostly unguarded. Weird thing to think about I know.

In all seriousness though, something has to give.

What … hamper Trump’s power grabs?

Realize that it is not Trump. Harris would have done it, too, and everybody would be cheering her for bringing Democracy to Venezuela, like Biden brought to Syria or Obama to Libya.

Honestly, the most patriotic moment is the ‘uh oh’ after you open the history book 😅 Learning the messy parts is how you do better going forward.
