For nearly a decade Elon Musk has claimed Teslas can truly drive themselves. They can’t. Now California regulators, a Miami jury and a new class action suit are calling him on it.

I know I’m going to get downvoted but I use FSD every day. It’s not perfect but it keeps getting better, and it’s already the best solution out there. If you haven’t actually used it then all you have is someone else’s opinion.
Stipulated: Elon still lied about the timetable.
Stipulated: Eton helping Trump and doing DOGE made me sick to watch.
Calling it full-self driving is also a lie, and that lie kills people. Whether it’s a good product or not isn’t really the issue.
FSD isn’t even close to the best solution.
It is why it is still illegal in the EU while other manufacturers have gotten approval.
Mercedes-Benz: Approved for Level 3 autonomous driving (Drive Pilot system) in Germany since 2021
Pony.ai: Became the first company to receive ministerial authorisation for autonomous car testing on public roads in Luxembourg in March 2025
Teslas approval: literally 0
Mercedes:
DRIVE PILOT is an SAE Level 3 (conditional automated driving) system: the automated driving function takes over certain driving tasks. However, a fallback-ready user is still required. The fallback-ready user must be ready to take control of the vehicle at all times when prompted by the vehicle.
Tesla:
The FSD (Supervised) features you receive are based on your configuration and location. Not all features are available in all markets, and features are subject to change. Learn more about Autopilot features. Note: These features are designed to become more capable over time; however, the currently enabled features do not make the vehicle autonomous. The currently enabled features require a fully attentive driver, who has their hands on the wheel and is prepared to take over at any moment.
Regardless of the marketing, both companies claim the same thing in the asterisk: Hands at the ready, attentive driver ready to take over.
I’m sure the lawyers made them put that in for liability purposes, regardless of how good the tech is.
When I had a Tesla, FSD Supervised was pretty damn impressive for what it did.
I could go basically door to door for my usual errands, which was super nice.
But I’ll never buy another Tesla while Elon is at all connected.
Then you’re a constant, proven, and clear danger to the public.
Have you seen the comma device? Effectively a lil android device with a camera that plugs into obd port.
I don’t think that’s toooo different from Tesla or many other automakers. None of them call it ‘self driving’. They’re driver assistants.
Does your car still have sonar and whatnot, or does it only use optical sensors? I think I remember there like being a switch to not using sonar anymore a while back and I got the impression that was a big detriment to Tesla’s self driving ability
Tesla actually removed software use of the lidars on the cars that had them, to “unify the stack”. So, the Tesla Model 3 2020 I had became worse as they “upgraded” the software stack.
Now driving a VW ID.7. It’s “autopilot” (travel assist) is far superior to Tesla’s autopilot. However, it does not have or pretend to have FSD.
Tesla’s FSD is impressive for what it can do. I would however be extremely wary to use it because it tries to do more than it should - being unable to handle edge cases.
