Has anyone found a good EU laptop option? Slimbook look like they’ve got some good products but I’m having trouble finding reviews.
I have a TUXEDO Book BU1407.
The hardware support is quite good. It works with mainline Linux without requiring proprietary drivers or firmware.
But the laptop is very noisy. Sometimes I have to put a T-shirt or something under it when I want to watch a movie in silence without hearing all the vibrations it causes on the desk.
It also has a big bright power LED that is very annoying and I have to cover it when I use it in dark environments.
In five years, I had to replace the battery or power supply twice, which they didn’t sell and I had to buy from third parties. When I contacted support to try to diagnose why my laptop was not charging, their reply included expressions like “We can’t do magic. […] We can’t see into the future and we can’t be clairvoyant either” which I found very rude and unprofessional.
For all these reasons, I will not buy TUXEDO again and I think I will give Slimbook a try the next time I need to buy a laptop.
I have an Slimbook Zero, and I am quite happy with it (not a laptop). I have had an Schenker Via Pro for more than 5 years now, and it is still going strong. The support has been awesome, a couple years ago I asked about where to get a battery replacement, as mine had bulged. They sent me a new one (I was already out of standard warranty period), at no cost!
Edit: little to none support if you use linux, but still recommending them.
Slimbook, Tuxedo Computers, and Star Labs are the only three I can think of at the moment. I’ve never used any of them though.
I like the look of slimbook from the website but it’s hard to find anyone who’s actually used one.
Bought a slimbook before covid. 14" in 13" frame. Still use it today because whenever something needs replacing it turns out I can get the parts and do it.
Read the spec sheets so you’re certain the usb-c port has power delivery and display port and such. Camera and microphone seemed lower quality. Keyboard was harder than Lenovo but way better than butterfly mac after the latter had any dust. Many manuals are Spanish (which I do not speak). Cooling was improperly executed (but my specific laptop was used for testing so perhaps something wasn’t right there) but still gets the job done.
The display is way better than similarly priced competitors. Since I bought this many around me have bought similar laptops (Tuxedo, BTO, Starlabs, …). Support is very accommodating over email.
I wanted to buy their newer model but I have no reason to so I’m still on what I bought back then.
I crossposted your question in another community. They mostly came up with the same brands (tuxedo, sllimbook,…) and also with some positive experiences.
Nah, just stay Asian
