Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•How closely are the feds watching lemmy?English
12·5 days agoDo I think that some desk nerd is planting himself in /c/trumpisafucktard trying to catfish the members into a meetup so they can kidnap him, waterboard him and then deport him to Lithuania? Of course not. Do I think that they have at some point had human eyeballs on something written on the fediverse that got flagged by AI? You can bet your trump-hating ass they have.
I imagine the feds(of all the letter varieties) have had the capability to scrape the entirety of the open internet and look for certain phrases or particular user data that meets their search criteria. If you think about it, Google has been doing it for years.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Are there seach engines that dont depend Google and Bing, if not what are the barriers to entry of new search engines?English
21·5 days agoKagi has independent indexes.
Kagi Search Sources( source ):
Kagi is known for delivering a unique flavor of high-quality search results, sourced from our own web index (internally named “Teclis”) and news index (internally named “TinyGem”). Kagi’s indexes provide distinctive results that help you discover non-commercial websites and engage with “small web” discussions surrounding a particular topic.
We don’t stop there; we are always trying new things to surface relevant, high-quality results. For example, we recently launched the Kagi Small Web initiative, which showcases content from personal blogs and discussions around the web. Discovering high-quality content written without the motive of financial gain gives Kagi’s search results a unique flavor and makes it feel more humane to use.
Our search results also include anonymized API calls to all major search result providers worldwide, specialized search engines like Marginalia, and sources of vertical information such as Wolfram Alpha, Apple, Wikipedia, Open Meteo, Yelp, TripAdvisor, and other APIs. Typically, every search query on Kagi will call a dozen or so different sources simultaneously, all with the purpose of bringing the best possible search results to the user in a split second.
Our unique algorithms down-rank pages with a lot of ads and trackers (which we have found correlate with a decrease in content quality) and promote content from independent, ad-free sources and personal websites. This ensures that Kagi shows results that delight users and are worth paying for. Subscriptions from our members pay for search results, allowing Kagi to remain ad-free and 100% privacy-respecting.

Technology@lemmy.world•Your New Therapist: Chatty, Leaky, and Hardly HumanEnglish
6·7 days agoWe need to reassess our relationships between ourselves and our communities and nation.
I suspect that’s much harder to do if you are one of the people your nation is trying to kill, deport or enslave.

4·7 days agoThat’s why they’re so sycophantic.
At least in my experience, that behavior was easily squashed via the customization blurb in the settings. When I talk to my ai client, I don’t get accolades, pandering or attaboys. It just tells me if if thinks my idea will work(it often points out my failures in logic) or answers the question I ask in a conversational tone. Since it provides links to all sources used in the answer, it’s easy for me to read up on what it used and decide if it’s a solid foundation of info.
The rest of your reply to my comment doesn’t really require a response from me since I never said it was the solution. I merely pointed out why some people are grasping at that particular straw.

5·7 days agoCould you expand on your thoughts? Are you speaking of the people using ai as a therapist or confidant? I wouldn’t but, at least in the US, younger people have been priced out of professional care.
Aside from that, many have ended up in a hostile country so casual smalltalk with randos has become much less appealing.
I can see the appeal of eschewing society as a whole in favor of a bot that I know won’t ask me my political or religious leanings and then tailor their behavior around my answer.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Do you feel a kinship with people who drive the same make/model car as you?English
2·7 days agoI super duper don’t which is rough on me when I’m driving my jeep. The area I live in has an exorbitant number of them and there’s a culture of having to acknowledge every single one you pass.
I happen to look away or down any time I see one coming.
I’m not a curmudgeon, I have just never wanted to be part of a culture because of something I own. That barrier is so low, you can basically guarantee that half of the group would be people you don’t care for.
I notice the same when driving my 59 beetle but bugs are so rare now, it’s not much of a trouble.
I enjoyed playing on their servers in the past, it was one of the more refined servers.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Back in the day you could find a forum post explaining exactly how anything worked, grey hat or not? Since then the internet has sanitized that out of existence. Should Lemmy revive that culture?English
5·9 days agoI still try to find forums for this type of thing. Social networks, lemmy included, are terrible for this type of communication. Content drops from view too quickly and you can’t possibly see everything across every community where somebody posts something relevant.
I wouldn’t try to fit this particular square peg where it doesn’t fit.

9·10 days agoI don’t know of a specific “old news” community but I see a lot of historical content posted on the Wikipedia, History, historyphotos, and similar communities. I guess it would depend on which historical event you wanted to share.
