      JFK has entered the chat.

      In the first televised presidential debate in 1960, radio listeners said that Nixon won, but TV viewers thought he looked thin and sallow compared to Kennedy’s youthful vigor and gave JFK the edge.

      Appearance has played a big role in politics ever since.

      I think they meant that in the sense that charisma is a practical tool to get elected and to get your message across, not that they want to see more hotties on CSPAN.

      Like the other reply said, it’s unfortunate that it’s a significant factor, but here it is.
